Men’s Soccer’s Lewis Named to Trinidad & Tobago U20 National Team

Trinidad & Tobago U20 Men's National Team selection announcement

RINDGE, N.H. (June 8, 2016)Jadiel Poon Lewis, an incoming goalkeeper for the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team, has been selected as a member of the Trinidad & Tobago Under 20 Men's National Team, as announced on Tuesday by the Trinidad & Tobago Football Association. Lewis will represent his country at the upcoming Caribbean Football Union (CFU) first round qualifying matches leading up to the 2017 FIFA Under 20 World Cup in South Korea.

Poon Lewis is one of 23 men selected to represent Trinidad & Tobago at the first round qualifier, during which the team will play three games. The U20 edition of the Soca Warriors will square off with Guadalupe on June 15, Turks and Caicos on June 17 and Saint Lucia on June 19.

The pool is one of four groups across the CFU for the first round of qualifying. Each group winner, plus the three best runners-up, will advance to the CFU's final round of qualifying in October. Teams from the CFU are ultimately competing for five spots in the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) final round of qualifying in February 2017. The CONCACAF qualifier will, in turn, send four teams to South Korea for the 2017 FIFA Under 20 World Cup.

The dual-island country is the host for its four-team first round pool, with all matches to be played at the 10,000-seat Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad & Tobago. The stadium, which opened in 2001, is named in honor of four-time Olympic medalist and 1997 World Champion in the 200-meter dash, Ato Boldon. Though Trinidad & Tobago also boasts two Olympic champions, Boldon is the only four-time medalist in the country's history.
