Goal in Each Half Sends Men’s Soccer Past New Haven, 2-1

Cortijo pots fourth goal of season

Cortijo Cortijo's second-half goal wound up the difference on Saturday night at New Haven.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 25, 2014) – Graduate student midfielder David Magee (Lurgan, Ireland) scored in the 19th minute and junior midfielder Lorris Cortijo (Paris, France) scored in the 79th minute on Saturday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Sophomore forward Rob Poirier had the lone goal in defeat for New Haven.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-5-1 (6-4-1 Northeast-10), while New Haven falls to 2-13-0 (1-10-0 Northeast-10). With two games to play, Franklin Pierce currently sits seventh in the Northeast-10.

The Ravens opened the scoring in the 19th minute on Saturday night in the Nutmeg State. Graduate student midfielder David Magee (Lurgan, Ireland) put away his first goal in a Franklin Pierce uniform, which would stand as the first half's only goal. After he collected a long ball, Magee beat his defender and then beat the keeper as well with a low shot into the far corner of the net.

The game would remain 1-0 heading into halftime, thanks in no small part to freshman goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom), who made a penalty-kick save against New Haven freshman back Ryan Fleming in the 26th minute.

The game would go without further scoring until the 79th minute, when Cortijo doubled the lead to 2-0 with 11:02 to play. The unassisted marker was his fourth goal of the campaign and came via a 30-yard blast after an individual effort to create his own shooting lane. The insurance marker proved important, as New Haven was awarded another penalty kick in the 89th minute, with just 1:25 to play. This time, Poirier put the shot away for his third score of the year to create the 2-1 final.

Franklin Pierce enjoyed a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts, but was only able to turn that into a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. LeGuyader made three saves to pick up the win (8-3-1) in net for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Marc Scelsa played the first half in goal for New Haven, made one save against two shots on goal and took the loss (2-9-0) for the Chargers. Junior James Pyatsky went the rest of the way and made two saves against three shots on goal.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 28, when they return home to host Merrimack in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
