Amory Houghton scores in 98th minute for team-high tying third goal of the season

RINDGE, N.H. (September 20, 2011) – The No. 4 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team won its third overtime game in a row with a 1-0 triumph over Dowling on Tuesday night at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10, while Dowling dipped to 4-2-1 and 0-0-1 in the ECC.

After a scoreless regulation, Franklin Pierce midfielder Amory Houghton (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) ended the drama with his third goal of the season in the 98th minute. The goal came about from Houghton's hard work, as he took a pass from Paul Latif (Newcastle, England), slipped into the lower box and fired off an initial shot that struck the post. The ball, however, caromed back to Houghton who then fired another low shot but it was blocked away from Dowling goalkeeper Chris Kucera. The third time was the charm for Houghton, as Kucera's saving attempt put the ball back on the midfielder's foot and he struck it low side underneath the keeper for the winning tally.

The goal moved Houghton into a tie for the team lead in tallies with three, joining senior back Tom Reilly (Wallasey, England). Houghton also took over the team lead in points with seven. Latif earned an assist on the play, marking the third-straight match he recorded a helper.

The 90 minutes of regulation proved to be physical as each side looked to gain an advantage in the scoreless tie. Dowling accumulated 22 fouls, while the Ravens totaled 11.

Franklin Pierce held a 17-8 advantage in shots and limited the Lions to just two combined shots in the second half and overtime.

Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.) made two saves to earn the shutout win and run his record to 6-0 on the season. The Ravens also ran their regular season unbeaten streak to 19-straight matches (18-0-1). The streak began after Franklin Pierce dropped a 2-1 decision at Dowling last season.

The Ravens return to action Saturday when they play host to Stonehill at 7 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
