Early Surge of Goals Leads Men's Soccer to 2-0 Win at UMass-Lowell

Ravens pick up quality win in Northeast-10 opener; have not allowed a regulation goal in the last three contests

BOXSCORE

LOWELL, Mass. (September 14, 2010) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team returned to its winning ways Tuesday night with a strong performance in a 2-0 victory at UMass-Lowell. The Ravens ran their record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Northeast-10 play, while Lowell dipped to 1-3 and 0-1 in league action.

An early surge of goals from Paul Latif (Newcastle, England) and Victor Goncalves (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) lifted the Ravens to victory on this evening. Their two goals scored less than four minutes apart were held up by a strong performance in net by junior goalkeeper Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.), who made five saves to earn the shutout victory. It marked his second shutout win this season and raised his overall record to 3-1. He has not allowed a regulation goal in the last three matches.

Latif got the scoring started in the 23rd minute as he booted in a goal off a free kick from the top of the box. It was Latif's first goal of the season.

Just minutes later, Goncalves found the back of the net as he followed a shot from Amory Houghton (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) that had glanced off a Lowell defender. Goncalves tracked down the loose ball and got off a strike that beat the UML goalkeeper. It was Goncalves third goal of the season and Houghton got credit with an assist.

Each team recorded 10 shots with each getting five of those on goal.

Franklin Pierce's win came in its Northeast-10 opener and stemmed the tide following a tough 1-0 overtime loss at Dowling last Tuesday. The win gives Franklin Pierce momentum heading into its contest at New Haven on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Connecticut. That match will bring an end to the team's three-game road trip, which will be followed by a four-match homestand that begins on Sept. 22 versus defending conference champion Le Moyne at 4 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
