Tabares scores to lead the Ravens offense

BOXSCORE

RINDGE, N.H. (October 24, 2009) – The Franklin Pierce University men’s soccer team closed out its 2009 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 triumph over Assumption at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens concluded their regular season unbeaten in their last eight matches (7-0-1), while improving to 12-3-2 overall and 10-2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds fell to 9-6-2 and 6-5-2 in the league.

Franklin Pierce now moves on to post-season action as they will host a first round game in the Northeast-10 Tournament next Sunday at Sodexo Field. Game times and the opponent are still to be determined.

The Ravens concluded their regular campaign with a strong defensive effort against Assumption. The team allowed the Greyhounds to register just three shots in the contest, and did not allow them to record one until there were three minutes remaining in the first half.

Sophomore goalkeeper Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.) was not tested much as he needed to make just one save in the contest. However, that save came at an important time late in the contest as he made it off a header attempt in front of the net. Papageorgiou concluded the regular season with a record of 10-2-1 in goal.

Sophomore Diego Tabares (Seekonk, Mass.) gave the Ravens all the offense they would need in the 31st minute when he sent home a cross pass in front of the net for his sixth goal of the season. Paul Latif (Newcastle, England) set up the goal with his cross pass to record the assist – his fourth of the season which tied Tabares for most on the team.

Tabares’ six regular season goals were second most on the team and only trailed Frantz Francois (West Palm Beach, Fla.), who totaled 10 scores in 17 games.

Francois and three others were honored during Senior Day festivities prior to the contest. Francois was joined by Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.), Kensaku Tsuji (Tokushima, Japan) and Sean Ahern (Somers, Conn.) as the four players who were honored at midfield and presented with framed pictures.

More information on the NE-10 post-season tournament will be released at a later time during the upcoming week. Fans are encouraged to visit athletics.franklinpierce.edu during the week to stay current on all the latest happenings with the Franklin Pierce men’s soccer program.
