Men's Soccer Takes Down Southern Connecticut State 2-0
Francois scores twice to lead Ravens
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 3, 2009) – The
Franklin Pierce University men’s soccer team fought off
severe weather Saturday night to pick up an important 2-0 road win
against Southern Connecticut State in New Haven, Conn. The Ravens,
who ran their unbeaten streak to three games, improved to 7-3-2
overall and 5-2-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Owls fell to
7-3-1 and 4-2-1 in the league.
The start of the game was delayed nearly 30 minutes due to
inclement weather that was rolling through the region. Neither team
scored in the opening 45 minutes.
A lightning strike in the area caused another delay in the second
half, but that would spark the Ravens, particularly graduate
midfielder Frantz Francois (West Palm Beach,
Fla.), in the final period as he scored twice to seal the
win for his team.
Francois notched his first goal 3:15 into the second half as he
knocked in a cross pass from sophomore midfielder Diego
Tabares (Seekonk, Mass.).
Francois’ second goal was unassisted and came at the 71:28
mark as slipped a low shot past SCSU goalkeeper Andrew
Esposito.
The two goals were the fifth and sixth this season for Francois,
who now leads the team in that category. Francois and Tabares are
both tied for the team lead in points with 12.
The Owls posted 12 shots to just seven by Franklin Pierce.
However, sophomore goalkeeper Vinny Papageorgiou
(Wilmington, Mass.) made the two goals stand up for
Franklin Pierce by making a pair of saves to earn the shutout.
Papageorgiou ran his record to 5-2-1 on the season.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Tuesday when it travels to
Springfield, Mass., to face American International at 7 p.m. For
