Men's Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Win Over Merrimack on Saturday
Frantz Francois and Collins Appau net goals for the Ravens
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (September 26, 2009) – The Franklin
Pierce University men’s soccer team picked up an important
2-1 win on Saturday afternoon versus Merrimack in North Andover,
Mass. The win bumped the Ravens record to 6-3-1 overall and 4-2-0
in the Northeast-10 Conference. Merrimack, which suffered its first
conference loss of the season, fell to 4-3-1 and 2-1-0 in the
league.
Freshman forward Collins Appau (Worcester, Mass.) and graduate
midfielder Frantz Francois (West Palm Beach, Fla.) each tallied an
unassisted goal to pace the Ravens in the win. Sophomore goalkeeper
Vinny Papageorgiou (Wilmington, Mass.) made those two goals stand
up as he totaled 12 saves to earn the win. Merrimack held a 20-12
advantage in total shots throughout the contest.
Francois staked Franklin Pierce to a 1-0 lead at the 40:41 mark
when he notched an unassisted goal for his fourth of the season.
However, Merrimack responded at 58:54 with a goal from Robbie
Sabadoz to knot the game at 1-1.
The early second-half goal did not phase Franklin Pierce, and a
little under 13 minutes later it took the lead for good at 2-1 on
Appau’s goal. His marker came at 71:37 when he tipped a
rebound past Merrimack goalie Doug Carvalho. The unassisted goal
was his first of the 2009 season.
The win was Franklin Pierce’s fourth in its last five
contests (4-1-0) and came on the heels of a tough 2-1 setback
Wednesday night at No. 21 Le Moyne. The Ravens are in the midst of
a season-long, five-consecutive games on the road, which continues
on Wednesday when they travel to face Saint Anselm at 3:30 p.m.
