Joyce Nets Goal in FC Dallas Debut

DALLAS -- FC Dallas opened its preseason schedule in splendid fashion with a 2-0 win over the University of Memphis on a windy Saturday morning at Craig Ranch in McKinney. Christopher Joyce and Justin Moore scored on either side of halftime to give the Hoops their second win in as many years over the Conference USA side.

FC Dallas currently has a league-high 12 draft picks in its preseason camp and all 12 saw at least 45 minutes of action in their professional debut. Midfielder Dax McCarty, Colin Clarke's top draft pick (6th overall) in last month's MLS SuperDraft, started the game in central midfield and helped to create the game's opening goal midway through the first half. The 18-year old North Carolina product received a pass at the top of the box from Dominic Oduro and deftly turned the ball into the path of Joyce who placed a low, left-footed shot past the Memphis 'keeper to put his new team up 1-0.

Both Joyce and McCarty went close to extending the Dallas lead later in the half but Joyce rolled his shot just wide and McCarty's effort crashed against the crossbar and the score remained 1-0 as the game reached halftime.

Clarke made just one change after the break, bringing Peter Louis for McCarty and placing the Dallas native up front alongside Joyce. That pairing would cause problems for the Tigers defense throughout the final 45 minutes, with Joyce hitting the post and each seeing shots slide inches wide of the Memphis goal.

While those two would go close, it was Moore who doubled the FCD lead midway through the second half. Moore, the 15th overall pick at the SuperDraft who started the game at right back before moving to central midfield, collected a pass 30 yards from goal and drove a right-footed shot that squirted through the Tigers 'keeper's hands and crossed over the line to make the score 2-0 for the home side.

That would be all the offense that the Hoops would need as first-year 'keeper Ray Burse Jr. made a number of impressive saves en route to keeping a clean sheet in his professional debut.

FC Dallas is back in action on Wednesday night when it takes on College Cup semifinalist SMU at 6 p.m. at Westcott Field in its second preseason game of the year.
