#1 Southern Connecticut Shuts Out Franklin Pierce, 2-0

Owls net two second half goals to race past Ravens

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 23, 2002) - Southern Connecticut State University, ranked No. 1 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, netted two second half goals to claim a 2-0 victory over Franklin Pierce, ranked fifth in the New England region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Jess Dow Field tonight.

Senior Kofi Remey netted what proved to be the game winning goal midway through the second half. Junior Levente Dobondi fed a ball through the right side where junior Olivier Occean one-timed a pass to Remey for a header past Franklin Pierce junior goalkeeper Domenico Roma (Windsor, Ontario/Ste. Annes) at the 61:45-mark.

The Owls got an insurance goal as Dobondi found a streaking Jonathan Matthews (Liverpool, England) for an 18-yard shot past Roma in the 89th minute.

Southern senior Andrew Olivieri registered two saves in preserving the shutout, while Roma stopped a career-high 11 shots for Franklin Pierce.

The Ravens best scoring chance came in the first half with an opportunity to take a lead, but a direct kick just outside the penalty area by junior Bjorgolfor Takefusa (Reykjavik, Iceland) was smothered by Olivieri.

Franklin Pierce (8-4-4, 5-3-4 NE-10) rounds out the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Springfield, Mass., for a Conference match with American International College at 10:30 a.m. Southern Connecticut (13-0-2, 10-0-2 NE-10) hosts Merrimack College on Saturday at 7 p.m.
