Franklin Pierce Defeats Assumption, 3-1
Ravens erase early deficit with three unanswered goals
RINDGE, N.H. (October 8, 2002) - Franklin Pierce, ranked sixth in this week's New England regional poll, netted three unanswered goals to erase an early deficit in posting a 3-1 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.
Junior striker Bjorgolfor Takefusa (Reykjavik, Iceland) led the way with a goal and an assist for Franklin Pierce.
Assumption jumped ahead at the eight-minute mark when senior Chris Laut intercepted a clearing pass from Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Domenico Roma (Windsor, Ontario/Ste. Annes) and slid a pass across the top of the penalty area for a one-timed shot from classmate Tim Orciuch.
The Ravens evened the match in the 24th minute of play as junior Frank Ressel (Eschborn, Germany) found freshman Evan Luster (Newington, Conn./Newington) with a through ball for a wide open shot into the right corner of the net.
Franklin Pierce controlled play in the second half and went ahead with a goal from sophomore Kyle Miller (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), assisted by Takefusa, at the 54:19-mark.
Takefusa collected a loose ball and found Miller for a shot that deflected off one Assumption defender before finding the upper right corner of the net. Takefusa gave the Ravens an insurance marker in the 75th minute, assisted by grad student Chris Schwarz (Babenhausen, Germany).
Roma finished the match with five saves for Franklin Pierce, while junior Josh Cole registered six saves for the Greyhounds.
Franklin Pierce (6-3-3, 3-2-3 NE-10) returns to the pitch on Saturday when it hosts No. 13 Merrimack College in a key regional and Conference match at 1 p.m. Assumption (5-9, 3-6 NE-10) hosts Saint Michael's College on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
