Franklin Pierce Handles New Haven, 7-1
McDermott's eight points carries Ravens offense
RINDGE, N.H. (October 15, 2001) - Franklin Pierce netted a season-high seven goals as it rolled to a 7-1 victory over the University of New Haven in a non-conference men's soccer match at Crystal Field this afternoon.
Junior David McDermott (Merseyside, England/Saint Mary's) totaled eight points with three goals and two assists to spark the Ravens offense as they surpassed their previous season-high total of six goals set in a season-opening victory over Bridgeport.
McDermott and sophomore Bjorgolfer Takefusa (Reykjavik, Iceland/Vt.-Business) assisted on the Ravens first goal as their give-and-go resulted in a wide-open shot by junior Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich./UC Santa Barbara) at 7:26.
New Haven knotted the match just 2:02 later as sophomore Frantz Charles scored after Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Dominico Roma (Windsor, Ontario/Ste. Annes) misplayed the ball near his goal.
The Ravens regained control as McDermott netted the gamewinning goal when he headed in a serve from sophomore Asgrimur Sigurdsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Univ. of Iceland) at 17:21.
Takefusa wrapped up the first half scoring with his first of two goals on the afternoon at 37:16, assisted by McDermott.
The Ravens netted four second-half goals, two by McDermott, one from senior Chris Schwarz (Babenhausen, Germany/Viktoria Aschaffenburg) and another from Takefusa. Senior Pat Teague (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and freshman Oriol Figuerola (Barcelona, Spain/Pilgrim, RI) registered assists.
Roma recorded two saves in goal for Franklin Pierce, while New Haven sophomore Chris O'Leary made nine stops.
Franklin Pierce (9-4, 5-4 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Conference battle at 3:30 p.m. New Haven (1-12) hosts the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
