Franklin Pierce Sneaks Past Merrimack, 3-2

Travis plays role in two Ravens goals to erase 2-1 deficit

RINDGE, N.H. (October 17, 2001) - Franklin Pierce held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but needed two goals in the final 20-minutes to pull out a 3-2 victory over Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.

Junior Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich./UC Santa Barbara) netted the gamewinning goal with just 3:08 remaining in regulation to lead the Ravens to victory. His blast into the lower left-hand corner of the net was set up by a through ball from sophomore Felix Brillant (Montreal, Quebec/College Francais).

Travis registered the assist on Franklin Pierce's goal at 70:55 by senior Pat Teague (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) that knotted the score at 2-2. Teague settled a through ball from Travis at the top of the penalty area and found the back of the net.

Merrimack erased a 1-0 Ravens lead in the first seven minutes of the second half with a pair of penalty kick goals. The first came just 41-seconds into the second stanza when sophomore Sean Malone converted the kick after he was tripped in the box by Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Dominico Roma (Windsor, Ontario/Ste. Annes). Roma reached out to punch the ball away, but missed and took down Malone.

Senior Ryan Leen put the Warriors ahead when he converted a penalty kick at 52:22. Malone forced the call when he was taken down in the penalty area by an Franklin Pierce defender.

The Ravens opened the scoring with a goal from sophomoreBjorgolfer Takefusa (Reykjavik, Iceland/Vt.-Business) at 14:57. His one-timed shot came after junior David McDermott (Merseyside, England/Saint Mary's) one-touched a serve from seniorDan D'Angelo (Ringwood, N.J./Don Bosco Prep).

Merrimack freshman Keith Boudreau recorded six saves to keep the Warriors in the match. Roma did not register a save for Franklin Pierce.

Franklin Pierce (10-4, 6-4 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University, ranked No. 5 in the nation, at 2 p.m. Merrimack (10-6, 5-6 NE-10) hosts the College of Saint Rose on Sunday at 1 p.m.
