Brillant Scores in 60th Minute to Lift Ravens

RINDGE, N.H. (Oct. 14, 2000) - Freshman midfielder Felix Brillant (Montreal, Canada) banged home a crossing pass from Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich.) to score the game-winner in the 60th minute Saturday as the Franklin Pierce men's soccer team beat New Hampshire, 2-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference match on Crystal Field. The Ravens (10-3, 7-2 NE-10) were coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to St. Michael's just two days earlier. The Penmen (6-3-4, 4-2-3 NE-10) were riding a four-game winning streak and had not allowed a goal in five games.

Ernest Olius (Hillside, N.J.) ended that streak in the third minute of the match when he chased down a long pass and beat charging N.H. College goalkeeper Tobias Svantesson (Goteborg, Sweden) with a chip shot from the top of the 18-yard-box. It was the first shot of the game for the Ravens, who started the week ranked eighth nationally in Division II and first in New England.

The Penmen tied the match in 48th minute with their first shot of the second half. Steven Kowlessar (Ottawa, Canada) deked a Franklin Pierce defender in the box and beat goalkeeper Rob Scholz (Schenectady) with a low shot to the near post.

Brillant got the game-winner when he beat a N.H. College defender to a ball in the box and weaved his way past Svantesson.

Scholz saved the game with several clutch shots down the stretch, including one against two-time All-America Richard Walker with just under four minutes left.

The win gives Franklin Pierce a 3-0 advantage over the New Hampshire College in the "101'' Challenge Trophy competition.
