Gordon Scores Three Goals as Ravens Rack Up 12th Win

RINDGE, N.H. (Oct. 24, 2000) - The Franklin Pierce men's soccer team scored on two of its first three shots and never looked back en route to an 8-0 win over the College of St. Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference match Tuesday at Crystal Field.

Sophomore forward Richard Gordon (Glasgow, Scotland) scored three goals, while junior forward Ernest Olius (Hillside, N.J.) scored twice, including one on the first shot of the game, occurring 53 seconds into the match.

Freshman midfielder Felix Brillant (Montreal, Canada), junior forward Pat Teague (West Haven, Conn.) and junior midfielder Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich.) also scored as the Ravens (12-4, 9-3 NE-10) looked sharp after Saturday's 2-0 loss to Southern Connecticut that dropped them to No. 10 nationally in Division II.

Before the game, the team's final regular-season match at home, seniors Rob Scholz (Schenectady, N.Y.), Tolga Yanmaz (Istanbul, Turkey), Shane Freebern (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) and Michael Carpenter (Russell, Mass.) were honored.

Scholz started in goal and recorded one save in 26 minutes, while Freebern finished out the game and made three saves to complete the shutout.

Sophomore midfielder Matt Jones (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had two dangerous shots for St. Rose (3-12, 1-12 NE-10).

Franklin Pierce owned advantages in shots (27-9) and corner kicks (7-0).

The Ravens close out the regular season Saturday in Syracuse, N.Y., when they take on Le Moyne in a NE-10 match.

Mike Carpenter (Russell, Mass.): Four-year player who has appeared in 55 games. Carpenter is a versatile player who can fit in anywhere on the field. At 6-2, 180, Mike brings size to the Franklin Pierce attack. On defense, he is a steady force who shuts down opposing teams. Moving up on the attack, Carpenter's deceptive speed makes him a dangerous weapon. A skilled air player, Carpenter brings a talent for headers to the field. Came back from a knee injury at the start of the season. Carpenter majors in environmental science.

Shane Freebern (Hudson Falls, N.Y.): A four-year player who has logged close to 400 minutes as part of a talented Franklin Pierce net-minding team. An experienced keeper who has proven that he can step up and do the job, Freebern made seven big saves in a tumultuous game at NHC last season, possibly his biggest game in a Franklin Pierce uniform. A tall player with tremendous reach, Freebern ranks in the program's all-time top 10 in goals against average (0.75) and save percentage (.833). Majors in sport and leisure management.

Rob Scholz (Schenectady, N.Y.): Four-year player who has been the incumbent starter since his sophomore season. Scholz has started 45 games in net and is the program's all-time leader in goals against average (1.16) for goalkeepers who have logged at least 2,000 minutes. Has recorded 13.5 shutouts in his career and holds the record for most consecutive shutout minutes with over 445. At 6-2, Scholz is on of the most athletic keepers the college has had and is on track to rank among Franklin Pierce alll-time top keepers. Majors in finance.

Tolga Yanmaz (Istanbul, Turkey): A three-year player at back for the Ravens who transferred in from Manhattan Community College. At Franklin Pierce, Yanmaz has started 49 games. An honorable mention all-conference player in 1998, Yanmaz elevated his game last season to be named to the New England Collegiate Conference first team. A quick and intelligent player, Yanmaz has been the backbone in an Franklin Pierce defense that does not give up many goals. His uncanny accuracy also makes him a selection to take free kicks. Majors in computer science.
