Junior Striker Scores Twice in 5-3 Win over AIC

RINDGE, N.H. (Oct. 7, 2000) - Ernest Olius (Hillside, N.J.) continued his torrid scoring spree Saturday, netting a pair of goals as the Franklin Pierce men's soccer team beat American International College, 5-3, in an emotionally-charged Northeast-10 Conference game at Crystal Field.

Olius, a junior transfer from Essex Community College, once again showed the form that made him a junior college All-America as scored twice in a up-and-down first half that ended with the Ravens (9-2, 6-1 NE-10) holding a 4-2 lead. He now has seven goals in three games.

Sophomore midfielder Richard Gordon (Glasgow, Scotland) got the Ravens on the board first, converting a cross from freshman midfielder Felix Brillant (Montreal, Canada) in the eighth minute. It was the first of three assists for Brillant.

Junior midfielder Chris Schwarz (Babenhausen, Germany) made it 2-0 in the 14th minute when he converted another cross from Brillant, and Olius capped off the flurry when Schwarz sent him in on a breakaway in the 17th minute.

Senior forward Jaime Marques (Milford, Mass.) got AIC (5-7, 3-5 NE-10) back in the game by scoring a pair of goals to make it 3-2. His first came on a rebound in the 19th minute, while he netted his second by heading in a free kick by Andrew Heald (Strafford, N.H.). Olius answered back in the 43rd minute when he took a cross from Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich.), cut across the box and beat AIC goalkeeper Brian Cloutier (Rocky Hill, Conn.) with a hard shot to the top shelf.

Franklin Pierce, which is ranked 12th nationally in Division II, stretched the lead to 5-2 in the 69th minute when Travis corralled a through ball by Brillant and deked AIC goalkeeper Peter Bisson (Manchester, N.H.).

Omari Murray (Kingston, Jamaica) kept AIC's hope alive when he made a great individual effort to score from the top of the box in the 86th minute, but Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Chris Hughes (Lenzie, Scotland) made several clutch saves down the stretch to protect the lead.

Hughes, a junior making his first start of the year, made eight saves, including seven in the second half.

The game rarely lacked excitement as the teams combined for eight goals, 39 shots, 47 fouls, nine yellow cards and two red cards that left both teams playing shorthanded to end the match.
