Golden Knights Gallop Past Ravens in Low Scoring Senior Day Affair

RINDGE, N.H.  (April 22, 2017) – Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse junior attack Jack Carney (Dunbarton, N.H.) tallied three goals and one assists, but his all-around effort wasn't enough as Northeast-10 Conference opponent the College of Saint Rose stole a 9-8 victory during Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 3-11, 2-8 NE10 and the loss sends the Ravens to 4-8 overall and 2-8 in league play.

In a pregame ceremony, the men's team honored their eight seniors, Scott DeLaura (Niantic, Conn.), Robert Meyers (Pompton Lakes, N.J.), Adam Holmes (West Suffield, Conn.), Nick Bradshaw (Westbury, N.Y.), Anthony D'Aprile (Smithtown, N.Y.), Devin Chen (Seabrook, N.H.), Liam Moloney (Goffstown, N.H.) and Collin Skinner (East Meadow, N.Y.) for their contributions to the university and its athletic department.

The game was low scoring as both squads combined for only 17 goals. Carney scored two of his goals in the second quarter as the Ravens erased an early 3-1 deficit to knot the game at the half. Saint Rose would score the final two goals of the third stanza and would tally the opening two goals of the fourth quarter to jump ahead by three, 9-6. The Ravens countered with two to come within one, but couldn't notch the equalizer.

Junior midfielder Benjamin Lassow (Mansfield, Conn.) and sophomore midfielder Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) each added a goal and an assist. For the Golden Knights they were led by a trio of two goal scorers, Jordyn Marchiano, Carter Badour and Josh Frese.

D'Aprile opened the scoring with an unassisted tally as he scooped up a groundball and fired a shot home right side to push the Ravens ahead early 1-0. Saint Rose would score three unanswered including a score with four seconds left as Badour ran around the cage and fired home an attempt with a man in his face to push the guests up 3-1 after one.

Carney matched Badour as he was face guarded as well, but that didn't stop him from rifling in a shot from the left wing to make it a one score contest. Saint Rose would tally two straight off a screen and a catch and shoot from the high slot to increase their advantage back to three at 5-2. Carney, Castorf and Sean Delea (Hampstead, N.H.) put in three consecutive markers to end the half tied at five.

Carney put Pierce in front as he and Castorf teamed up for a bouncing catch and shoot attempt from the close right wing. Saint Rose tied the game with 1:17 left then three penalties occurred which saw Ravens starting goalkeeper Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.) head to the penalty box for a one minute unsportsmanlike conduct offense. Backup netminder Matthew Pinto (Babylon, N.Y.) was thrust into action and allowed a score with 13 second left on the penalty off a catch and shoot high in the box off the stick of Marchiano to push the Golden Knights ahead 7-6.

The guests would add two insurance goals over the first seven minutes before Luke Tracy (Pelham, N.H.) and Benjamin Lassow would cut the deficit to one once again. Franklin Pierce had two chances to send the game into overtime, but Delea's shot was blocked before it reached the cage and Benjamin Lassow was stifled by Golden Knight goalie Liam Guiton to close the game out.

The Ravens conclude their 2017 season on the road Friday when they head to conference opponent Pace for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
