Men’s Lacrosse Holds on for 11-9 Win over Assumption

RINDGE, N.H. (April 6, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team took an 8-0 first-half lead over the Assumption College Greyhounds on Wednesday afternoon. Then, over the second half, the Greyhounds were able to score nine goals, but the Ravens' first-half advantage was enough to lead them to a Northeast-10 Conference win at Sodexo Field, 11-9.

With the win, the Ravens advance to an overall record of 4-4, and 3-3 in conference play, while the Greyhounds fall to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast-10.

Sophomore goalie Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.) took the win, he faced 16 shots on goal and made eight saves to improve to 4-3 on the season. Assumption goalie John Demott fell to 1-3 on his season after making five saves against 13 shots on goal in the first half.

For the first goal of the game, sophomore midfielder Sean Delea (Hampstead, N.H.) put the ball past Demott on a bounce into the bottom-left corner to open the scoring. The Ravens poured in three more unanswered goals, with sophomore midfielder Ben Lassow (Mansfield, Conn.), sophomore attack Jack Carney (Dunbarton, N.H.) and freshman midfielder Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) all scoring goals in the first to push Franklin Pierce out front, 4-0.

The second started with back-to-back Delea goals, both from just outside the crease. Lassow and junior attackman Anthony D'Aprile (Smithtown, N.Y.) also notched goals in the quarter to put the Ravens up, still unanswered, for an 8-0 lead going into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Greyhounds went on a 4-1 scoring run, finally able to hold off Ravens offense at bay. Freshman attack Travis Reid had three of the Assumption goals to cut into the deficit of the first half and make it 9-4 heading into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Assumption continued to fight back, with Reid and sophomore attack Patrick Ward taking part in the five-goal quarter for the Greyhounds. Carney and Castorf kept the Ravens in the lead with their goals along the way. Ultimately, Assumption was not able to pull off the second-half comeback and fell, 11-9.

Leading the Ravens was Delea and Carney with their respective hat tricks, while Delea also earned three assists on the day. Lassow and Castorf had two goals apiece to round out the Ravens win. As a team, the Ravens took a total of 38 shots and collected 27 ground balls, including a team-high four for Wacksman.

Assumption was lead by Reid with four goals and Ward with two. As a team, the Greyhounds took 26 shots and snagged 30 ground balls, including a game-high seven for senior midfielder Nick Guarino.

The Ravens hit the road for their next game, on Saturday, April 8 at Adelphi for a 1 p.m. start.
