Men's Lacrosse's Big Second Half Rally Not Enough in Tough 11-10 OT Setback at Assumption

Dintaman and Noonan score three times apiece to lead Ravens offensive attack

BOXSCORE

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 9, 2011) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team forced overtime with a late goal on Saturday, only to see Assumption score a marker in the extra session in an 11-10 setback on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. The Ravens fell to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast-10, while Assumption improved to 7-4 and 3-3 in league play.

The Ravens found themselves trailing 5-0 at halftime, but they responded in the second half by putting on a furious rally which eventually saw them tie the score at 10-10 with 1:37 left in regulation. Junior midfielder Ryan Dintaman (Northfield, Mass.) got the equalizer as he scored his third of three goals on the afternoon with a shot that beat the Assumption goaltender low side.

It was an incredible moment for the Ravens, who doubled up the Greyhounds in the second 30 minutes by out-scoring them 10-5.

However, the late goal did not phase Assumption as it scored the winner with just 2:39 remaining in overtime as a Will Langevin shot eluded the reach of Franklin Pierce freshman goalkeeper Tim Izzo (Trumbull, Conn.). Despite suffering the loss, Izzo had a solid game in goal as he made a career-high 19 saves to keep his team in the contest.

In addition to Dintaman's three goals, freshman midfielder Edward Noonan (Foxboro, Mass.) threw in a trio of tallies, while seniors Jack Scanlan (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Nate Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) followed with two scores apiece. Dintaman also notched a pair of assists on the afternoon to total a five-point day, and Noonan recorded a helper for a four-point performance.

Langevin and Tim Roy led a balanced Assumption offensive attack with three goals each. In all, seven Greyhounds had at least one tally on the day. Scott Vogel made 10 saves in goal to earn the win.

Assumption came out of the gates and scored a little more than one minute into the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. Roy, then, scored three-straight goals for Assumption to bridge the first and second quarters, and Connor MacNeil dumped in a shot with just :09 left in the half to give the Greyhounds a comfortable 5-0 lead at the break.

Franklin Pierce, though, would fight back and Dintaman and Wood fired in two strikes in the early-going of the third quarter to pull the Ravens to within 5-2. After another Assumption goal, Scanlan and Wood collected markers to make it 6-4. The Greyhounds did score a late tally in the third, but Noonan sent home a shot with only :06 left in the frame to make it 7-5 after three quarters.

Assumption scored to open the fourth quarter, but the Ravens scored four-consecutive goals to to go up 9-8 with 3:26 to go. Noonan scored twice during the barrage, including capping it with his third goal of the game. Langevin and Tom Guido, though, answered with a goal apiece just seconds later to put the Greyhounds back on top 10-9. Dintaman followed with his late heroics, but it wouldn't be enough as the Ravens fell in overtime and thus dropped their third-straight game.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday night when the Ravens play host to Saint Michael's at 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field. The game will be a Pierce Pride contest with free giveaways being handed out to 150 college students. The giveaways are courtesy of the Sports and Rec Club at Franklin Pierce University.
