Men's Lacrosse Overcomes Three Goal Halftime Deficit to Pull Off Exciting 10-8 Win Over AIC
Cahill, Noonan and Dintaman each toss in three goals for the Ravens
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 30, 2011) -- The Franklin Pierce
University men's lacrosse team shook off a 6-3 halftime deficit to
pull off a satisfying 10-8 come-from-behind win over American
International on Wednesday night at Abdow Field in Springfield,
Mass. The Ravens snapped a three-game losing skid to improve to 3-3
overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10, while AIC dipped to 0-6 and
0-2 in league play.
Sophomore attacker Brendan Cahill (Hollis, N.H.),
who was making his 2011 season debut, scored three goals for the
Ravens on a team-high 14 shots. Freshman midfielder Edward
Noonan (Foxboro, Mass.) continued his strong play as he
fired in a trio of goals, marking the second-straight game he
registered a hat-trick. Junior middie Ryan Dintaman
(Northfield, Mass.) was the other Raven to score three
times on the evening.
Franklin Pierce senior midfielder Jack Scanlan (Great Neck,
N.Y.) scored the other goal for the Ravens, while
assisting on another for a two-point evening. Junior middie
Eric Harries (Dunstable, Mass.) was the other
Raven to total multiple points on the evening as he assisted on a
pair of markers.
Freshman goaltender Tim Izzo (Trumbull, Conn.)
produced a second-straight solid game in goal as he made 11 saves
to earn the win and run his record to 3-3 during his rookie
campaign.
AIC controlled the pace of play early on and the Yellow Jackets
scored three-straight goals to open the first quarter. Cahill
stemmed the tide briefly as he took a pass from Scanlan and beat
AIC goalie Eric Whettell with a shot at the 4:11 mark of the first
quarter to make it 3-1.
However, American International opened the second quarter with
back-to-back markers from Aaron McNab and Andrew Martin in a
44-second span to take a 5-1 advantage. Noonan and Cahill
registered unassisted goals at 11:17 and 8:41 of the quarter to
pull within two goals, but the Yellow Jackets tossed in a late
tally to take a 6-3 advantage into halftime.
Despite trailing by three goals at halftime, Franklin Pierce did
out-shoot AIC, 26-20, in the opening 30 minutes and the Ravens used
that aggressive style to its advantage in the second half by
opening the third quarter with five-straight goals to grab an 8-6
lead.
Cahill's third goal of the game at the 10:34 mark of the stanza was
sandwiched between a pair of goals from Dintaman. Noonan threw in a
tally at the 6:21 mark and Scanlan followed with his lone goal at
the 3:36 mark.
Dan MacIssac scored for American International with just 1:14 left
in the third to pull the Yellow Jackets to within a goal, but
Franklin Pierce put the game out of reach early in the fourth
quarter with goals from Dintaman and Noonan. Noonan's three tallies
also extended his streak to five-straight games with multiple
points.
McNab did score for AIC with a little more than 11 minutes left in
the game to bring his team to within two goals. However, Izzo shut
the door on a potential AIC comeback by making two saves in the
final frame to seal the win for Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Saturday when the Ravens return
to Sodexo Field for the first time in a month when they play host
to Bentley at 3 p.m.
