Saint Anselm Runs Past Franklin Pierce, 16-5

RINDGE, N.H. (April 18, 2009) - Saint Anselm College wrapped an 8-0 run around halftime to break open a one-goal contest early in the second quarter en route to a 16-5 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action during "Rocky the Raven Fun Day" as part of Pierce Pride Week at Sodexo Field this afternoon.

Senior Matt Surette (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) and junior Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, Mass./Belmont Hill) led Saint Anselm with three goals and an assist each for four points. O'Connell also contributed six ground balls and caused a turnover. Senior Chris Murphy (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) added two goals, while senior Myles Clancy (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and juniors Kevin DeBenedetto (Reading, Mass./Reading) and Ryan McDonald (Bow, N.H./Bow) each chipped in with a goal and assist.

Freshman Matt Forzaglia (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Harmon) netted multiple goals in his second-straight contest, leading Franklin Pierce with two goals. Sophomore Jack Scanlan (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) added a goal and assist. Junior Spencer Murray (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) collected four groundballs and caused for turnovers for the Ravens. 


Freshman Matt Forzaglia scored two goals for the second-straight match to lead the Ravens.

Sophomore Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) picked up the win in goal for Saint Anselm, making eight saves over the first 45-minutes in goal. Classmate Pat Acone (Bow, N.H./Bow) made seven stops in the final quarter. Sophomore Shea Campbell (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) played the full 60 minutes and made 11 of his season-high 17 saves in the first half to keep Franklin Pierce in the game.

Saint Anselm finished with a 49-34 advantage in shots for the match. The Hawks converted on 2-of-6 man-up situations, while Franklin Pierce converted on 1-of-3.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring when senior Jason Flanigan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) scored with the man advantage 3:49 into the game, assisted by Scanlan. Saint Anselm answered less than three minutes later with a man-up goal by sophomore Steve Porter (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), assisted by Surette, with 8:13 to play in the opening quarter. The Hawks took the lead for good with just 15-seconds left in the quarter with a goal from O'Connell, assisted by junior Matt Dunkle (Exeter, N.H./Kimball Union).

Surette scored an unassisted goal 2:36 into the second quarter to put Saint Anselm up two. Franklin Pierce pulled back within a goal (3-2) when Scanlan scored unassisted with 9:52 to play in the first half. The Hawks opened a 6-2 halftime lead with three goals in the final 2:05 of the opening half. O'Connell had a goal and assist in that time, scoring with 2:05 to play before setting up a goal from McDonald with 1:32 left. DeBenedetto wrapped up the run with an unassisted goal with 32-seconds remaining.

Saint Anselm took control of the game with five more goals to open the third quarter to cap the overall 8-0 run. The Hawks scored five times in the span of 2:08, capped by a goal from sophomore Matt Ludlow (West Simsbury, Conn./Northwest Catholic) with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter, putting the Hawks up nine (11-2).

Franklin Pierce (1-9, 1-6 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday night when it visits Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m. The Ravens return home next Saturday to host 5th-ranked Merrimack College for Senior Day at 4 p.m. Saint Anselm (6-5, 4-3 NE-10) travels to Saint Michael's College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
