Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Saint Michael’s in Season Finale, 2-0

Senior Day ceremony

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 16, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team wrapped up its season on Saturday afternoon at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena, as the Ravens suffered a 2-0 defeat to visiting Saint Michael's. Senior forward Nic Hermary netted both goals to lead the Purple Knights in the Northeast-10 Conference affair.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce closes out the campaign at 10-15-1 (5-9-1 NE10), which establishes a new program record for wins in a season. With the win, Saint Michael's improves to 7-15-4 (7-5-3 NE10). The Purple Knights have qualified for the NE10 Championship as the third seed and will travel to Southern New Hampshire for a semifinal contest next Saturday.

Saint Michael's got the only goal it would need at the 10:47 mark of the first period, on a faceoff play. In the left circle, senior forward Sam D'Antuono won the draw straight back to Hermary, who was positioned inside the circle, directly behind the faceoff dot. Hermary fired a quick shot and picked the top-left corner of the goal for his ninth tally of the year.

Hermary would later tack on an insurance marker on the power play at the 1:28 mark of the third period to create the 2-0 final. The Ravens penalty kill managed to clear the zone, but could not get the puck much farther than the red line, before freshman forward Matt Egan circled back to corral it. Egan turned the corner and turned on the jets to lead a rush right back into the offensive end on the right side. As he pushed below the faceoff dot, he slipped a pass into the middle for an also-charging Hermary, who again went to the top-left corner for his second goal of the day.

Sophomore goaltender Ian Wallace (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with 37 saves against 39 shots and suffered the loss (5-12-1) in the Franklin Pierce crease. At the other end of the ice, junior netminder Tim Decker (6-6-3) stopped all 19 shots he faced to complete his weekend shutout of the Ravens.
