Men’s Ice Hockey Falls at Salve Regina, 4-0

Ravens home against Suffolk on Saturday

McGuckin McGuckin had the 10th outing of 50-plus saves in program history with 53 stops on Friday night at Salve Regina.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (December 5, 2014) – Seahawks junior forward Cameron Gaudet and sophomore forward Evan Schultz had a goal and an assist each on Friday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Salve Regina in non-conference play at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink. Freshman goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) piled up 53 saves -- tied for the seventh-most in program history -- in defeat for the Ravens.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-7-0 (2-2-0 Northeast-10), while Salve Regina improves to 4-4-2 (3-2-0 ECAC Northeast).

Salve Regina scored the first period's only goal, and the only goal the Seahawks would need on Friday night, on the power play at the 16:06 mark. Gaudet scored the eventual game-winner, his second goal of the campaign, off assists from senior defenseman Matthew Carroll and junior defenseman Lance Sousa.

The Seahawks struck twice in the final six minutes of the third period to take a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. First, at 14:21, Carroll added his second of three assists on the night, as he and Schultz set up the first career goal for freshman forward Pat Thompson. Just 2:19 later, at the 16:40 mark, Carroll picked up another helper, this time on the second of the season for freshman forward Evan Schmidbauer.

Salve Regina capped the scoring on the power play at 15:15 of the third stanza to create the 4-0 final. Schultz's fourth of the year came off assists from Gaudet and senior forward John Scorcia.

McGuckin's 53 saves came against 57 shots on goal, as he was stuck with the loss (1-1-0) in front of the Franklin Pierce goal. At the other end of the ice, senior goaltender Frankie McCormick finished with 23 saves to pick up the win (1-0-0) and his first career shutout.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Dec. 6, when they return home to host Suffolk in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
