Cornele, Sweeney Each Score Twice, Ice Hockey Powers Past Southern New Hampshire, 6-1

Five Ravens tally multiple points

Cornele Cornele scored twice, both times on the power play, in Saturday evening's win at Southern New Hampshire.

HOOKSETT, N.H. (February 5, 2011) – Sophomore forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Tyler Cornele (Cape Coral, Fla.) each scored twice on Saturday evening, and Sweeney added an assist to finish with three points, as the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team posted a 6-1 victory over Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 Conference play at The Ice Den. Sophomore defenseman Chris Hickey scored the lone goal for Southern New Hampshire.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 5-16-0 (4-4-0 Northeast-10), while Southern New Hampshire falls to 4-13-2 (2-5-1 Northeast-10). With the win, Franklin Pierce takes the three-game season series from SNHU, 2-1-0, and claims the two points in the Northeast-10 standings.

The Ravens scored the only goal of a relatively quiet first period on the power play at the 15:33 mark. Cornele finished off a feed from Sweeney to score his fifth goal of the season.

From there, Franklin Pierce opened the lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the first half of the second period. Junior forward Pat Shortt (New Haven, Conn.) scored his sixth of the season, the eventual game-winner, on an assist from junior forward Justin Adams (Homer, Alaska) at the 4:31 mark. Sweeney followed with his team-leading 10th of the season on the power-play at 9:51. Freshman forward Bryan Colella (Medfield, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Brendan McCarron (Andover, Mass.) provided the assists.

Southern New Hampshire got on the board with its lone goal of the game at the 13:42 mark of the middle stanza. Hickey put home his sixth of the season without an assist.

Franklin Pierce broke the game open by scoring at even strength, shorthanded and on the power play in the third period to create the 6-1 final. First, Sweeney popped home his second of the night with assists from sophomore forward Michael Carr (South Boston, Mass.) and junior forward Bill Sullivan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at the 5:45 mark. At 13:32, with the Ravens shorthanded with Colella in the penalty box for roughing, Carr netted his first goal of the season. Cornele capped the evening's scoring with a power-play goal at 16:28 with assists from McCarron and Sullivan, who both finished off their two-point nights.

Freshman goaltender Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) made 35 saves and picked up the win (5-4-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Tyler Holske made 36 saves and took the loss (4-6-1) between the pipes for Southern New Hampshire.

Franklin Pierce posted a 42-36 advantage in shots on goal on the night and went 3-for-10 on the power play. Southern New Hampshire finished 0-for-3 with the man-advantage and surrendered a shorthanded goal along the way.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Feb. 12, when they return home to host Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass. Prior to the game, Franklin Pierce will honor the accomplishments of its senior class. The game is also a part of Franklin Pierce's Breast Cancer Awareness Day, which also features basketball games at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. at the Fieldhouse in Rindge, N.H.
