Franklin Pierce men's golf

WATERTOWN, Conn. (October 11, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's golf team opened its penultimate tournament of the fall season on Monday, as the Ravens played 36 holes on the first day of the Eagles Invitational, hosted by Post University, at the par-71, 6638-yard Watertown Golf Club. Once again in the midst of a crowded midfield, Franklin Pierce turned in rounds of 309 (+25) and 304 (+20), and is in ninth place in a 14-team field with one round remaining.

The 309-304--613 (+45) line left the Ravens toward the rear end of a crowded midfield, but also left the team in position to make up spots in Tuesday's final round. Through Monday's play, third through 10th place were separated by just 22 shots. Franklin Pierce is six shots behind eighth-place Bentley and one shot clear of 10th-place American International.

At the top, Southern New Hampshire is 10 shots clear of the field after a 290-285--575 (+7) opening day. The Penmen lead the host Eagles of Post, who checked in at 292-293--585 (+17). Saint Anselm is third, at 294-298--592 (+24).

Junior Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) and freshman Peter Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the way for the Ravens on Monday. The former went 75-76--151 (+9), while the latter went the other way around at 76-75--151 (+9), and the two are part of a six-way tie for 23rd in an 81-golfer field. Sophomore Jake Berkio (Ashburnham, Mass.) is tied-40th at 79-75--154 (+12), but then things dropped off from there. Sophomore Thomas Hickey (Moultonborough, N.H.) turned in a 79-82--161 (+19) and is tied-60th, while sophomore Matt Lynch (Melrose, Mass.) carded an 86-78--164 (+22) and is tied-66th.

The rest of the field is chasing SNHU sophomore AJ Cavotta, who continued a solid fall by turning in a line of 70-71--141 (-1) to lead by a shot following Monday's play. Assumption sophomore Sean Magarian is one back at 70-72--142 (E), while Le Moyne freshman Johnny Gruninger and SNHU senior Matt Conti are tied-third at 143 (+1).

The Eagles Invitational will wrap up with the third and final round on Tuesday at Watertown Golf Club.
