CONCORD, N.H. (October 6, 2021) -- The second round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship left something to be desired for the Franklin Pierce University men's golf team on Wednesday, at the 6543-yard, par-70 Concord Country Club. A young team which has shown its volatility early in the season found itself in fourth place after Tuesday's first round, but turned in the third-highest round of the day on Wednesday, as the Ravens slipped two spots to a sixth-place finish in the 10-team field. The NE10 Championship was hosted by Southern New Hampshire.

Sophomore Thomas Hickey (Moultonborough, N.H.) had the low round of the day for the Ravens, as he turned in a Wednesday 75 (+5). He was followed by junior Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) and freshman Peter Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.), who took 77 shots apiece (+7). Sophomore Jake Berkio (Ashburnham, Mass.) closed out the team's scoring four at 80 (+10), while freshman Jake LaMonica (Quincy, Mass.) carded an 85 (+15) to round out the five-player lineup.

It all added up to a second-round 309 (+29) for Franklin Pierce, which was 12 shots worse than Tuesday's 297 (+17). On Wednesday, the Ravens bettered only Adelphi at 325 (+45) and Saint Michael's at 319 (+39), which ultimately represented the final two finishers in the field. Franklin Pierce's final line of 297-309--606 (+46) was good for sixth place, two shots behind fifth-place Bentley at 304-300--604 (+44) and one shot clear of seventh-place Saint Rose at 300-307--607 (+47).

Despite the second-round backslide, the Ravens were still just five shots in back of fourth place. On the other hand, they were also only three shots clear of eighth place in a crowded midfield. The only movement in the field from the first day were Franklin Pierce and Saint Rose both slipping two spots, while Bentley climbed two spots, as did Saint Anselm, which finished in fourth place at 301-300--601 (+41).

At the top of the heap, Assumption ran away with the league title, as the Greyhounds put together a line of 289-290--579 (+19), which represented the two lowest rounds of the tournament and was good for a 15-shot victory over second-place Le Moyne at 293-301--594 (+34). The Dolphins took second by just one shot over host SNHU at 294-301--565 (+35).

On the individual side of things, Sosik and Hickey were the only Ravens in the top 20 of the 50-golfer field, as they were both part of a five-way tie for 13th at 149 (+9). Wurszt went 76-77--153 (+13) to tie for 24th, while Berkio finished tied-28th at 75-80--155 (+15). LaMonica's line of 78-85--163 (+23) put him tied-44th.

SNHU junior Jeff Liss' Tuesday 68 (-2) stood as the low round of the tournament, and he added a Wednesday 73 (+3) to cruise to a three-shot victory at 141 (+1). Assumption sophomore Sean Magarian followed at 71-73--144 (+4) in second place, while five players finished tied-third at 145 (+5).

The Ravens will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 11-12, at the Post Eagles Invitational, at Watertown Golf Club in Watertown, Conn. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at the 54-hole tournament.
