Michael Sosik

VICTOR, N.Y. (May 7, 2022) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's golf team closed out its fifth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance on Saturday, with a final-round 307 (+19), to finish 18th out of 20 teams at the Atlantic/East Regional, hosted by Le Moyne, at the par-72, 7083-yard Ravenwood Golf Club. Junior Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) put together a final-round 73 (+1) to finish tied-sixth in a 108-golfer field.

Sosik definitely shone the brightest for the Ravens on the week, as he posted a steady line of 72-74-73--219 (+3), which left him just six shots off the pace. He moved up four spots with Saturday's one-over round and missed out on an individual qualifying spot for the NCAA Championship National Finals by just two strokes.

As for the rest of the Ravens, none could finish in the top half of the field, though two squeaked inside the top 70. Freshman Peter Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Thomas Hickey (Moultonborough, N.H.) both finished amid a six-way tie for 69th, with the former checking in at 78-77-76--231 (+15), and the latter posting a line of 76-73-82--231 (+15). Farther back, freshman Jack Paterson (Franklin, Mass.) was tied-94th at 80-87-76--237 (+21), while sophomore Jake Berkio (Ashburnham, Mass.) brought up the rear in solo-108th at 86-86-85--257 (+41).

It was a consistent line on the week for the Ravens, who checked in at 306-305-307--918 (+54) to finish 18th, though they were only 16 shots out of a top-10 finish amid a competitive field. At the top, St. Thomas Aquinas converted its 36-hole lead into a regional title, with a final-round 295 (+7), to post a final line of 286-300-295--881 (+17). It was good enough for a two-stroke victory over Charleston (W.Va.) at 292-299-292--883 (+19). Gannon and Davis & Elkins tied each other for third at 887 (+23) to take the final two qualifying spots for the National Finals. Fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Southern New Hampshire finished fifth and missed out on a berth by just two shots, at 889 (+25).

Individually, Davis & Elkins junior Jordan Hyland used a closing round of two-under 70 to turn in a final line of 73-70-70--213 (-3) and claim medalist honors by three shots. Charleston junior Mitch Hoffman and STAC freshman Nolan Skaggs -- the second-round leader -- finished tied-second at even-par 216. Individual qualifying spots for the National Finals went to Post sophomore Jace Carlisle and SNHU sophomore AJ Cavotta, who tied each other for fourth, at 217 (+1).
