Men’s Golf 16th after First Day of NCAA Atlantic/East Regional

VICTOR, N.Y. (May 5, 2022) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's golf team opened its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship on Thursday, with the first of three rounds at the Atlantic/East Regional, hosted by Le Moyne, at the par-72, 7083-yard Ravenwood Golf Club. Junior Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) led the way for the Ravens with an even-par 72 in the first round, and is currently tied-11th in a 108-player field. As a team, Franklin Pierce turned in a 306 (+18), and is 16th out of 20 teams through 18 holes.

The Atlantic/East Regional is a three-day event, with the second round set for Friday and the third round to follow on Saturday at Ravenwood Golf Club. At the conclusion of play on Saturday, the top four teams, plus the two lowest-scoring individuals not on one of those teams, will advance to the NCAA Championship National Finals, which are set for May 16-20 at TPC Michigan in Detroit.

It was three Ravens in the 70s on Thursday, as sophomore Thomas Hickey (Moultonborough, N.H.) is tied-54th at 76 (+4) and freshman Peter Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) is tied-75th at 78 (+6). Freshman Jack Paterson (Franklin, Mass.) rounded out the team's scoring four at 80 (+8), and is tied-89th, while sophomore Jake Berkio (Ashburnham, Mass.) closed out the five-player lineup at 86 (+14), and is solo 108th. The Ravenwood Golf Club averaged just shy of four strokes over par on Thursday, with a scoring average of 75.93.

It all added up to an opening-round 306 (+18) for the Ravens, who are currently 16th in a bunched field, where sixth and 17th places are separated by just 10 shots. In fact, Franklin Pierce is only 11 shots off of the final qualifying spots for the National Finals with 36 holes to play. Up front, St. Thomas Aquinas has staked itself to a six-stroke lead with an opening 286 (-2), while the next four sports are separated by just three shots. Charleston (W. Va.) is second at 292 (+4) and Post is third at 293 (+5), while Livingstone and Southern New Hampshire are tied for fourth at 295 (+7).

Individually, 10 players were able to fire under-par rounds on Thursday, led by a three-under 69 from Post sophomore Jace Carlisle. He holds a one shot lead over a four-player tie for second at 70 (-2).
