Franklin Pierce men's golf

HAWORTH, N.J. (March 22, 2022) -- With just 20 shots covering the top nine teams after Monday's first round, Tuesday was set up to be volatile at the second and final round of the Battle at the Beech, hosted by Dominican (N.Y.) College at the 6839-yard, par-72 White Beeches Golf & Country Club. The volatility worked in the wrong direction for the Franklin Pierce University men's golf team, which turned in a second-round 334 (+46) and tumbled from second place to a seventh-place finish.

Freshman Peter Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) had been fourth at the tournament's midway point, but a Tuesday 84 (+12) meant a two-day total of 159 (+15) and a tied-15th finish in the 66-golfer field. All five Ravens would be in the 80s in the second round, and Wurszt was followed by junior Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.), who was tied-22nd with a two-day line of 78-84--162 (+18). Sophomore Thomas Hickey (Moultonborough, N.H.) and freshman Jack Paterson (Franklin, Mass.) were both in the top half of the field as well. Hickey shot a Tuesday 82 (+10) and Paterson had an 85 (+13), as both finished at 164 (+20) for the tournament. Sophomore Jake Berkio (Ashburnham, Mass.) rounded out the team's five-player lineup in a tie for 36th, at 81-84--165 (+21).

When all was said and done, it meant a second-round total of 334 (+46) for the Ravens, which was 21 shots worse than Monday's 313 (+25), as the team posted a two-day total of 647 (+71) and fell from second place overnight into a seventh-place finish in the 12-team field.

Up front, Post used a Tuesday 313 (+25) to convert its first-round lead into the team title, at 307-313--620 (+44). Bentley, Assumption and American International finished in a three-way tie for second, 14 shots back, at 634 (+58).

Individually, AIC freshman Li Su and Post senior Bill Koch had both shot 73 (+1) on Monday, and each followed up with six-over-par rounds of 78 on Tuesday, to share medalist honors at 151 (+7). Assumption senior Ryan Fillebrown was solo-third, one shot back, at 79-73--152 (+8).

The Ravens are right back in New Jersey next weekend, for the Charger Challenge, also hosted by Dominican. Play will take place on Monday and Tuesday, March 28-29, at Soldier Hill Golf Club in Emerson, N.J.
