Men’s Golf Finishes 10th at NCAA East Regional

NORTH EAST, Pa. (May 8, 2021) - It was not to be for the Franklin Pierce University men's golf team on Saturday at the NCAA Championship Atlantic/East Regional. Five rounds in the 80s meant a final-round total of 327 strokes (+39), and the Ravens dropped from fourth after the second round all the way to a 10th-place finish to close out their season. The Atlantic/East Regional was hosted by Mercyhurst University at the par-72 Lake View Country Club, which checked in at 6850 yards for the final round.

Graduate students Liam Donohue (Vernon, Conn.) and Sam Myers (Colchester, Vt.) both turned in 80s (+8), which wound up as the top scores of the day for Franklin Pierce. Senior Dylan Plis (Camillus, N.Y.) followed at 83 (+11), sophomore Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) shot an 84 (+12) and freshman Thomas Hickey (Moultonbourough, N.H.) carded an 88 (+16).

Unfortunately for the Ravens, it all added up to a 327 (+39), which was the highest score of the day in the 16-team field. Franklin Pierce's three-round total came to 943 (+79), which left them one shot behind ninth-place Charleston at 942 (+78) and three shots in front of 11th-place Assumption at 946 (+82).

Donohue was the leading Raven over the course of the tournament, as he put together a three-day total of 233 (+17) to finish in a tie for 22nd in the 85-golfer field. Myers finished tied-32nd at 236 (+20), Plis was tied for 40th at 238 (+22), Sosik finished in a tie for 54th at 241 (+25) and Hickey was tied-72nd at 250 (+34).

Gannon used a final-round 307 (+19) to notch a three-day total of 912 (+48) and scoot past first- and second-round leader St. Thomas Aquinas to take the Atlantic/East Regional title. The Spartans finished three shots back at 915 (+51) in second place, while Davis & Elkins also secured a spot in the NCAA Championship finals in third place at 918 (+54).

The fourth and final berth in the finals came down to a playoff, as both Fayetteville State and Bentley finished tied at 932 (+68). Fayetteville State was able to punch its ticket on the first playoff hole. The NCAA Championship Finals are set for May 17-21 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Individually, Bentley senior Tommy Ethier and Mercyhurst junior Jack Angelucci both carded final-round 74s on Saturday to post identical three-round totals of 223 (+7) at the top of the leaderboard. The two went to a playoff, and Ethier prevailed as the tournament's medalist on the second playoff hole. With the playoff victory, Ethier also claimed at spot at the NCAA Championship finals, as the top golfer on a non-advancing team.

Behind Angelucci, it was a three-way tie for third to round out the top five at the Atlantic/East Regional. Davis & Elkins sophomore Evan Lewis, Concordia (N.Y.) junior Gabe Goodman and Gannon sophomore Connor Bennink all carded three-round totals of 225 (+9) to finish two shots back.
