Men’s Basketball Comes up Short at Stonehill, 72-61

Maxwell Zegarowski

EASTON, Mass. (February 8, 2022) -- A 16-point, 10-rebound double-double from junior Maxwell Zegarowski (South Hamilton, Mass.) was not enough on Tuesday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's basketball team suffered a 72-61 loss on the road at Stonehill. Senior Andrew Sims notched a game-high 17 points and led three Skyhawks in double digits in the Northeast-10 Conference contest at Merkert Gymnasium.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 10-7 (7-5 NE10), while Stonehill improves to 12-10 (8-8 NE10).

The Ravens led by as many as five late in the first half, but Stonehill finished the stanza on an 11-2 run to take a four-point lead (33-29) into the locker room. Franklin Pierce was able to draw level early in the second half, but could never reclaim the lead. Ultimately, Stonehill pulled away down the stretch on the way to the 11-point victory.

Stonehill was marginally better from the field, as the Skyhawks hit at a 47% clip (30-for-64), compared to 42% (25-for-59) for Franklin Pierce. The stark distance came from long range though, as the Ravens could not get anything to go from behind the arc on the way to a dismal, 2-for-19 (11%) night from three-point land. Stonehill was not exceptional from long range either, but even the 7-for-25 (28%) performance made for a 15-point swing, in a game ultimately decided by 11 points.

Zegarowski chalked up the double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, to lead four Ravens in double figures in points on the night. Freshman Mohamed Traore (Hyde Park, Mass.) added 13 points, junior Isaiah Moore (Temple Hills, Md.) chipped in 12 and freshman Sean Trumper (Ashford, United Kingdom) contributed 10. Moore filled out his stat line with seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.

For Stonehill, it was 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting for Sims, who was followed in double digits by fifth-year Owen Chose (13 points) and sophomore Emmanuel Bonsu (10 points). Freshman Christopher Melis chalked up eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench.

The Ravens are right back on the road on Thursday, when they travel to Saint Rose for a NE10 contest at 6 p.m. in Albany, N.Y.
