Men’s Basketball ousts Pace 78-65

RINDGE, N.H. (January 21, 2015) – The Franklin Pierce Men's Basketball team came out firing on Wednesday night, and after coming off a tough loss on Saturday to New Haven, the Ravens were able to take the victory over the Pace University Setters by a final score of 78-65 at the Fieldhouse.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 11-6 (6-4 Northeast-10) while Pace takes another in the loss column to make their record 5-14 (1-10 Northeast-10) and add to a tough year so far.

The game ball for Franklin Pierce went to senior Paul Becklens (Boston, Mass.) after his chase at a potential triple-double after finishing with four points, eight rebound, seven assists, and four steals on the game. All of those stats, minus points, led the Ravens in each category.

Franklin Pierce was able to knock down shots at ease in the first half, shooting at a 19-30 clip, equaling out at just over 63 percent, including 7-13 (53.8 percent) from behind the three-point arc. The Ravens would fall off the table in the second half, but were able to keep an abundant lead throughout.

The Ravens dominated in points off turnovers, as they were able to gain 18 points in that department compared to seven points for Pace. Franklin Pierce also controlled the floor with their bench depth, scoring 26 points to the Setters' 12 points.

The Ravens biggest lead of the day came at a 27-point spread with just over seven minutes remaining in the second half after a three-pointer from sophomore Ben Mead (Ipswich, England). However, the Ravens would not score a basket the remaining seven minutes of the half, allowing Pace to make a valiant effort back into the game.

Leading the way for Franklin Pierce was both senior Ryen Vilmont (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) who each recorded 17 points in the victory. A plethora of Ravens followed suit, as freshman Dustin Cole (Standish, Maine) finished with 10 points on the day on 4-7 shooting, while fellow classmate Mike McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) finished with a solid eight points.

Junior Tyler Iacuone (Mahopac, N.Y.) would also make a strong push into the notable stat line with four assists. Gittens would do the same and add two steals to his resume for the night, as well.

For Pace, junior Shelton Mickell would put on a show for the opposing fans in the Fieldhouse, going off for a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. He also added a team-high four assists while only committing one turnover. Junior Jaylen Mann and freshman Jared Pearson would each tickle the twine for 10 points apiece for other standout performances from the Setters.

The Ravens return to the floor this Saturday, January 24 as they travel to New Haven to take on last year's reigning East Region champions, Southern Connecticut State University. Tip-Off for the matchup is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
