Men’s Basketball sends fans home happy for the holidays, defeat Dominican (N.Y.) 88-72

RINDGE, N.H. (December 21, 2014) – As things gear down for the holiday's in Rindge, a job still had to be done on Sunday as the Franklin Pierce men's basketball team went out and defeated the Dominican (N.Y.) College Chargers by a final score of 88-72 in non-conference action. Senior Ryen Vilmont (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a game-high 26 points in another 20 plus point performance, as he went 6-8 from behind the arc.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 7-4 (2-2 NE-10) while Dominican falls to 5-9 overall (3-2 CACC).

The game featured a lot of half court play, along with a handful of fast break attempts that were not converted for points. Even though at points it seemed the circus came into town, the game stayed close throughout and the lead was separated by no more than six points either way in the first half. Not until there was seven minutes left in the game did Franklin Pierce grab the first double-digit lead for either side in the game. It all came down to shooting behind the arc, as the Ravens were able to finish at 40 percent, while Dominican finished at 20 percent. The Chargers only attempted 10 three-pointers all game.

The Ravens were led by Vilmont's 26 points as he also grabbed nine rebounds, one short of a double-double. Sophomore Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) swooped in with a full stat line of 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, three blocks, and two steals, while freshman Dustin Cole (Standish, Maine) chipped in his third consecutive double-digit scoring game with 14 points on 5-9 shooting with two three pointers. Senior Paul Becklens (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Mike McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) also finished in double-digit scoring, as McDevitt finished with 11 and Becklens with 10. Becklens also dished out four assists and swiped three steals.

For Dominican, Nick Smith had a monster day in the paint, able to put in 23 points from the lower block, while Robert Hueston added in 18 points as the only other Charger in double-figures. Hueston also grabbed eight rebounds along with teammate Joe Clinton, and Smith was able to dish out a team-high five assists as well.

The Ravens will now be on break for just short of two weeks until a New Year's Eve main event at Bentley on December 31. Game time is set for a 2 p.m. start.
