Men's Basketball Rallies Late But Comes Up Short in 86-72 Loss at Assumption
Nigel Van Oostrum tosses in game-high 15 points for the Ravens
WORCESTER, Mass. (January 19, 2011) -- The
Franklin Pierce University men's basketball team mounted a
second-half rally, but came up short in an 86-72 loss at Assumption
in Laska Gym in Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday. The Ravens fell to
5-12 overall and 3-9 in the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds
improved to 9-9 and 6-6 in league play.
Four Ravens scored in double-figures, led by sophomore guard
Nigel Van Oostrum's (Sheffield, England) 15
points. Senior guard Jeff Manchester (Gorham,
Maine) followed with 14 points, while grabbing seven
rebounds and handing out three assists. Freshman guard
Dayshawn Long (New York, N.Y.) scored in
double-figures for the first time in his collegiate career as he
netted 12 points and senior guard Kinard Dozier (Dedham,
Mass.) was the Ravens' other double-digit scorer with 10
points, while also pulling down six rebounds.
Mike Baldarelli, Tobin Haase and Bobby Harris each pumped in a
team-high 14 points to spark Assumption's offensive attack.
Baldarelli also pulled down 11 boards to register a double-double
on the evening.
Franklin Pierce found itself trailing by as many as 14 points
early in the second half, but the Ravens regrouped and mounted a
surge, which would see them take a 58-56 lead with 8:53 left in the
game. Franklin Pierce scored 10-straight points late in the rally
to take the slim two-point lead. Dozier sparked the run with a
jumper and Long knocked down back-to-back triples to knot the score
at 56. Freshman forward Matt Barboza (East Providence,
R.I.) then drained a baseline jumper to put the Ravens on
top for a brief moment.
It was then Assumption's turn to go on a run and the Greyhounds
did so by mounting an 8-0 rally to take a 64-58 lead with 7:06
remaining. Tim Beinert scored the run's first five points with a
layup and a three-pointer from the top of the key.
That run would prove to be the difference in the game as
Assumption would not trail the rest of the way in going on to earn
the victory.
Franklin Pierce shot 42 percent (27-of-64) from the field and held
a 41-36 advantage on the glass despite suffering the setback.
The early stages of the first half were tightly contest, but an
11-0 run by Assumption turned a 24-21 lead into a 35-21 advantage
with a little more than three minutes left in the stanza.
Three-consecutive three-pointers from Baldarelli, Haase and Ryan
Rozsnaki kick-started the late rally and the Greyhounds eventually
built a 40-28 lead at halftime.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Saturday afternoon when the
Ravens play host to American International at 3:30 p.m. in The
Fieldhouse in Rindge. The game is part of Rocky the Raven Kid's Day
as area children will be admitted to the game for FREE if
accompanied by a paying adult.
