Field Hockey Falls at No. 10 Bentley, 2-0

Franklin Pierce field hockey

WALTHAM, Mass. (October 20, 2021) - The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team hit the road on Wednesday afternoon, but could not put much of an offensive threat together in a 2-0 loss at No. 10 nationally ranked Bentley. Sophomore Katie Thies struck in the first half, and junior Ava Bevilacqua added another in the second half for the host Falcons. The Ravens were outshot 19-3 on the afternoon and failed to put a shot on target.

With the loss in the Northeast-10 Conference affair, Franklin Pierce drops to 3-12 (1-10 NE10) and has lost five in a row. Bentley improves to 10-4 (8-2 NE10) and has won five straight.

The Falcons took the lead late in the second quarter, off of a penalty corner in the 26th minute. The ball originally left the circle on the start of the corner, but was quickly regained by senior Katelyn McGuigan, who sent it back into the middle. Her feed found Thies, who held for a second before firing a shot into the lower-right corner of the FPU goal to give Bentley a 1-0 lead with her seventh goal of the campaign.

The game remained a one-goal contest through the majority of the second half, but an insurance goal from Bevilacqua came in the 53rd minute. Her seventh of the season came from the middle of the circle as well, after freshman Hannah Blomquist provided the setup from the right side.

Freshman Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) played the first half in the Franklin Pierce net and suffered the loss (3-8) after making four saves against five shots. Junior MacKenzie Potvin (Goffstown, N.H.) took over for the second half and made six saves against seven shots. Bentley junior Madison Clark (6-1) did not have to face a shot on goal on the way to her second shutout of the season.

The next game for Franklin Pierce will be Saturday, Oct. 23, on the road at NE10 opponent Adelphi University. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Motamed Field in Garden City, N.Y.
