Field Hockey Doubled Up at SNHU, 4-2

Christine Jarowicz

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 26, 2021) – Twice on Sunday, the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team held a one-goal lead, but neither time could they make it stick at Larkin Field. Instead, host Southern New Hampshire rallied with a pair of third-quarter scores, plus another in the fourth, to stick the Ravens with a 4-2 loss in the Northeast-10 Conference contest, despite a 14-8 advantage for Franklin Pierce in shots on goal. Junior Christine Jarowicz (Kennebunk, Maine) and senior Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) found the net for the Ravens in defeat, while freshman Annemartine Christis put home a pair for SNHU.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-7 (0-6 NE10), while SNHU gets into the win column for the first time in 2021 and improves to 1-5 (1-3 NE10).

Franklin Pierce broke the ice midway through the second quarter, with 6:52 remaining until the halftime break. Freshman Rebecca Phillips (West Amwell, N.J.) forced a turnover in the midfield before creating separation and sending the ball to Jarowicz in the scoring circle. Jarowicz turned towards the net to fire a shot into the bottom right of the SNHU cage for her second goal of the season.

The Penmen tied the game back up at 1-1 before halftime, thanks to the first of Christis' two goals, but the Ravens would come out of the break on the attack. Senior Meghan Winn (Newburyport, Mass.) received the ball just over the midfield line and carried it down the field. Freshman Caity Hazley (Kingston, Mass.) and van Doorn were both in the circle, and Winn found the latter, which allowed van Doorn to score her fourth goal of the year to give the Ravens a 2-1 lead.

SNHU would tie the game just 1:40 later on the sixth of the campaign for Christis. This time the opportunity would come off a penalty corner. Senior Emily Campbell started the play for Southern New Hampshire at the goal line and played it to Christis for a quick shot.

Campbell would score a goal of her own, her second of the year, with 6:32 left in the third stanza to give the Penmen their first lead of the game at 3-2. One more goal in the fourth, the first collegiate goal for sophomore Emma Thibodeau, would provide insurance for SNHU and create the 4-2 final.

Freshman Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished with four saves against eight shots and suffered the loss (1-3) in front of the Franklin Pierce cage. Graduate student Kate Pigsley (1-5) chalked up 12 saves against 14 shots to pick up the win for SNHU.

The Ravens are back in action on the road against American International College on Wednesday, Sept. 29, with a 7 p.m. NE10 contest at Abdow Field in Springfield, Mass.
