Field Hockey Comes Up Short at AIC, 3-2 (2 OT)

Franklin Pierce field hockey

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 31, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team had a bit of a flair for the dramatic at Abdow Field on Wednesday night. The Ravens came from behind to tie the score twice, once on an extended corner after time had expired in the first half, and once with just 4:18 to play in regulation. However, it was home-standing American International which would provide the final theatrics on the night. The Yellow Jackets got a winner from senior forward Meghan Brock 3:13 into the second overtime to come away as 3-2 winners in the Northeast-10 Conference contest.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-9 (3-7 NE10), while American International improves to 2-13 (2-8 NE10).

With the loss, Franklin Pierce finds its postseason hopes on life supports. Eight NE10 teams have already secured six or more wins on the season. With three games remaining, the Ravens can do no better than match the total of the four teams currently with exactly six league wins. With the top eight teams advancing to the NE10 Championship, Franklin Pierce would need to win all three of its remaining games and receive some help to find a way into the postseason. The Ravens host Southern New Hampshire on Nov. 3, host Assumption on Nov. 6 and travel to Saint Anselm on Nov. 9.

All five of the game's goals came off penalty corners, of which AIC earned 14, to just five for Franklin Pierce. AIC struck first, directly off of a corner at the 29-minute mark. Graduate student back Megan Stewardson inserted the ball on the play, and sent it to junior back Chelsea Davis at the top of the circle. Davis stepped into a big shot from there and drove her blast past everybody and inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce answered while playing out a corner after time had expired in the first half. The corner play largely broke down, but ultimately resulted in a scramble for the ball on the left side of the circle. Freshman midfielder Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) was the one to dig out the ball, and put a shot into the right side of the cage. The goal was initially disallowed, as one official appeared to whistle a foul against the Ravens on the play. However, after the two officials conferenced, the goal wound up standing as van Doorn's fourth tally of the campaign. The goal snapped Franklin Pierce's scoreless streak at 231:37, and was the team's first goal since Oct. 19 at LIU Post.

The tie would be short-lived, as AIC claimed a 2-1 lead just 2:06 into the second half. Again on a corner play, Davis went to step into a shot from the top of the circle. She largely fanned on her attempt, which resulted in what appeared to possibly be a dangerous play on her follow through. The potential foul was not whistled though, and Davis was ultimately able to tip the ball forward and to her left to junior forward Jenny Holmquist, who had the finish from there for her third goal of the year.

From there, the game went nearly a half-hour without another goal, before Franklin Pierce was able to dig up the equalizer late, in the 66th minute, on a play which mirrored AIC's first goal. Freshman back Julianne Sacco (Southborough, Mass.) inserted on the corner play to senior midfielder Raegan Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) at the top of the circle. Moulton teed up a shot from there and threaded the ball through traffic, into the left side of the net, for her third goal of the season.

The final 4:18 of regulation, plus all 10 minutes of the first overtime went scoreless, before AIC struck for the winner 3:13 into the second overtime. The Yellow Jackets again ran a play for Davis at the top of the circle. From there, she found Brock in front of the left post, and Brock slotted her third goal of the year inside the right post to spark the AIC celebration.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) finished with five saves against eight shots on goal and suffered the loss (6-9) in net for Franklin Pierce, while junior back Jessica Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) added a defensive save along the way. At the other end of the field, freshman Jessica Stone (2-12) made eight saves against 10 shots on goal to pick up the win for AIC.
