Strong Second Half Propels Field Hockey Past Saint Michael’s, 3-1

Franklin Pierce field hockey

RINDGE, N.H. (October 4, 2017) – Wrapping up a four-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon, the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team erased a lackluster first half by putting the pedal to the floor in the second half at Sodexo Field. Second-half scores from junior midfielder Raegan Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) and junior forward Ashley Silva (Laconia, N.H.) were the difference, as the Ravens turned a 1-1 halftime tie into a 3-1 win over visiting Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 6-5 (3-3 NE10), while Saint Michael's falls to 4-6 (1-4 NE10). After each team had three shot attempts in the first half, Franklin Pierce rattled off an 8-1 advantage in shot attempts in the second half. For the game, the Ravens accrued edges of 11-4 in shot attempts, 5-3 in shots on goal and 5-3 in penalty corners.

The day held significance for multiple Ravens seniors who are chasing program records in 2017. For goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.), it was the 26th win of her career, which established a new program record, breaking her tie with Brittany Nyzio '12. Meanwhile, forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) figured in on all three goals for the Ravens and finished the day with four points on one goal and two assists. The goal was the 30th of her career, and she became just the second player in program history to reach the 30-goal mark. Canavan now has 30 career goals and 72 career points, which leaves her four goals and one point behind Tia Levins '12 for the program record in each respective category.

Saint Michael's opened the scoring early, as the Purple Knights capitalized on a defensive breakdown by Franklin Pierce in its own end in the fourth minute. As the Ravens' coaching staff would point out after the play, the defense was caught "ball watching" in the offensive right-wing side of the circle, which allowed Saint Michael's to work the ball to freshman forward Maddie Green in an advantageous position along the end line. Green centered for junior forward Morgan Johnston, who finished off her first goal of the season near the right post just 3:59 into the contest.

The Ravens struck back with their first of two penalty-corner goals in the 18th minute. Canavan injected the ball to the top of the circle for junior back Sarah Bjorn (Holden, Mass.), who dished it off to the left for Moulton, who in turn wound and fired from there. In the meantime, Canavan had maneuvered her way into the shooting lane. She was able to stop the drive, turn, find a shooting lane of her own and finish for her fourth goal of the campaign.

After the remainder of the first half went without much further incident, Franklin Pierce put home a pair of second-half goals to pull out the 3-1 win. The Ravens took the lead for good in the 47th minute, off of another penalty corner. Again, Canavan injected for Bjorn at the top of the circle. This time, Bjorn played stick-stop for Moulton, who was set up to unload her shot as part of the battery. Despite heavy traffic in the goalmouth, Moulton's shot found its way through untouched and banged to the back of the cage inside the right post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

It would be Silva who provided the insurance marker, with her second goal of the season, in the 54th minute. Canavan had the feed from the top of the circle on the left side. The ball went into traffic in the middle of the circle, but still found Silva, who was able to turn and put a shot inside the right post to cap the scoring.

Williams (6-5) finished with two saves against three shots on goal to lock up her record-setting win. At the other end of the field, sophomore goalkeeper Anna Hurley (4-6) made two saves against five shots on goal in the loss for Saint Michael's.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Adelphi for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Motamed Field in Garden City, N.Y.
