Grimard Snaps Long Scoreless Streak, Field Hockey Falls at Pace, 2-1

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (October 1, 2016) – With her first goal of the season, senior midfielder Andrea Fahey (Hudson, Mass.) broke a long scoreless streak for the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in the 53rd minute on Saturday afternoon. Her goal tied the Ravens with Pace at 1-1, but the host Setters would get a goal from sophomore forward Jenna Sanossian with just 5:15 to play to pick up the 2-1 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play at Finnerty Field.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-7 (0-5 Northeast-10) and has lost seven in a row, while Pace improves to 5-4 (3-2 Northeast-10). Fahey's second-half goal snapped a scoreless drought of 420:36, which stretched back to the first half against Saint Anselm on Sept. 11. It was the longest scoreless stretch for the Ravens since a program-record streak of 486:05 during the 2012 campaign, when the team was shutout in six straight games.

Pace scored the first half's lone goal on Saturday afternoon, just 37 seconds before the halftime break. Sophomore midfielder Jane Kasparian put home the opening goal, with a shot which deflected off of Franklin Pierce junior goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) and into the cage. Sophomore forward Halley Rose had the assist on Kasparian's second goal of the season.

Fahey drew the Ravens level, with their first goal in nearly three weeks, in the 53rd minute. On a penalty corner, junior forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) injected the ball to senior midfielder Kenady Kelly (Plymouth, N.H.), who laid it off for junior back Lauren Grimard (Turners Falls, Mass.). Grimard put her shot through traffic, and Fahey was able to redirect it en route to score her first goal of the campaign.

It would be Pace who struck last on Saturday, however, as the Setters broke up the deadlock in the 65th minute. Off of a penalty corner, freshman back Rachel Beam set up the team-leading fourth goal of the season for Sanossian, which would stand as the game-winner.

The game stood relatively even statistically on the afternoon. Franklin Pierce held advantages of 8-6 in shot attempts and 11-9 in penalty corners, while each team recorded four shots on goal.

Williams (2-7) finished with two saves against four shots on goal in a losing effort in net for Franklin Pierce. Junior netminder Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (5-4) made two saves in the win for Pace, while junior back Margaret Maclean added a defensive save.

The Ravens return to the field on Sunday, Oct. 2, when they travel to first-year program Molloy for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Bay Park in East Rockaway, N.Y.
