Ravens hold possession edge throughout; fall on first-half corner

RINDGE, N.H. (September 12, 2010) – The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team held a 12-6 advantage in shots on Sunday afternoon, but dropped a 1-0 decision to C.W. Post in non-conference play at Sodexo Field. Senior midfielder Vicky DeRosa scored the only goal of the game off a penalty corner for C.W. Post.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-2 (1-0 Northeast-10), while C.W. Post improves to 2-0 (0-0 Pennsylvania State).

C.W. Post scored the only goal of the first half off a corner just past the seven-minute mark. Senior forward Amanda Nann took the corner and sent it to senior midfielder Vicky DeRosa. DeRosa rifled a shot from the top of the circle which found to back of the cage to break the scoreless tie.

The rest of the half went scoreless, as Franklin Pierce went into halftime facing a 1-0 deficit, despite holding a 9-2 shots advantage and a 4-1 edge in penalty corners.

The Ravens saw their comeback attempt in the second half partially derailed by a pair of yellow cards. Just over 14 minutes into the half, Franklin Pierce lost freshman midfielder Liz Noddin (Skowhegan, Maine) to a yellow card for five minutes. Just 17 seconds later, junior midfielder Kim Jaksina (Townsend, Mass.) was hit with a seven-minute yellow card of her own. The Ravens killed off the entirety of the disadvantages, but were never able to strike for the tying goal.

Junior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) stopped one of the two shots on her cage and took the loss (1-2) for Franklin Pierce. Junior Devon Trenkle stopped all six shots sent her way to pick up the win (1-0) and post the shutout for C.W. Post.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Southern Connecticut State for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.
