BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (September
16, 2009) – Junior forward Amanda Nann scored the
game-winning goal in the first half and added an assist in the
second half on Sunday afternoon to lead C.W. Post to a 2-0 victory
over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in
Northeast-10 Conference play at Hickox Field.
With the win, C.W. Post improves to 1-3 (0-3 Pennsylvania State),
while Franklin Pierce falls to 1-5 (0-1 Northeast-10) with the
loss.
After much of the first half went scoreless, C.W. Post broke the
ice with 4:47 to play in regulation to take a 1-0 lead into the
halftime break. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Miller sent a pass into
the circle towards the front of the cage. Nann took it five yards
in front of the net and sent a backhand shot past Franklin Pierce
sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro,
Mass.) to give the Pioneers the lead.
Franklin Pierce was not able to muster much offense over the
opening 35 minutes, as it went into halftime without attempting a
shot. C.W. Post held a 9-0 shots advantage and an 8-1 edge in
penalty corners in the first period.
C.W. Post would pick up an insurance marker 12:51 into the second
half as Nann sent a penalty corner into the middle of the field.
Junior midfielder Vicky DeRosa got on the other end of the feed and
sent a shot which beat Nyzio to the lower-left corner to create the
2-0 final.
C.W. Post held a 5-2 edge in shots in the second half to finish
with a 14-2 advantage for the game. Franklin Pierce was awarded a
pair of penalty corners in the second half to finish with three for
the game, while C.W. Post took four to finish with 12.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Colern was not forced to make a save
between the pipes for C.W. Post en route to the win (1-3) and her
first shutout of the season. Nyzio stopped four of the six shots on
her cage and took the loss (0-4) in front of the Franklin Pierce
net.
The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when they
travel to Saint Anselm for a non-conference contest. Game time is
set for 4 p.m. in Manchester, N.H. Franklin Pierce next plays at
