Waterville, Maine native becomes 11th Raven featured in “Faces”

Kristin Tormollan Kristin Tormollan is featured in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the Dec. 8 issue of Sports Illustrated.

RINDGE, N.H. (December 4, 2008) – Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) of the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team is featured in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of the December 8 issue of Sports Illustrated. The “Sportsman of the Year” double issue hits newsstands this weekend and Tormollan will also be featured online at www.si.com/faces. During the season, Tormollan helped lead Franklin Pierce to its first berth in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships since the 2001 season.

Tormollan is featured for being selected Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, as well as being named first-team All-Conference. In addition, she is recognized for setting program goalkeeping records in minutes played (1,414) and games started (20).

Tormollan is the 11th student-athlete or coach from Franklin Pierce to be featured in “Faces in the Crowd”, and the first selection from the field hockey team. Others who have been included in “Faces in the Crowd” from the University are women’s soccer All-Americans Laura Hislop (10/31/05), Meghan Welcome (12/15/03) and Pauliina Miettinen (11/10/97) and Hall of Famer Nathalie Geeris (12/26/94), women’s soccer head coach Jeff Bailey (December, 1999), men's soccer All-Americans James Thorpe (12/13/04) and David Clifton (12/31/07) as well as Henning Comé (10/29/07) from the men's soccer team, women’s basketball All-American Johannah Leedham (1/15/07) and men’s basketball Hall of Famer Bob Szklarz (1968). In addition, women’s soccer All-American Gabriela Demoner was featured in the “Faces in the Crowd” portion of SI Latino’s October/November issue earlier this year.

In addition to Goalkeeper of the Year and All-Conference accolades, Tormollan was also named to the All-Rookie Team by the Northeast-10 and recently garnered national honors with a selection to the womensfieldhockey.com All-Rookie Squad.

Tormollan played all but 5:35 in front of the Franklin Pierce cage this season. Her 126 saves ranked fourth in the Northeast-10, while she also finished fifth in goals against average (2.13) and sixth in save percentage (.746).

Tormollan was an All-State performer at Waterville High School before coming to Franklin Pierce, leading the Panthers a Maine State Championship her senior year.

The Ravens finished the 2008 campaign with a 7-13 record, including a 7-11 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play. Franklin Pierce finished sixth in the conference, earning its third postseason appearance since joining the conference prior to the 2000 season.
