RINDGE, N.H. (October 16, 2008) – Sophomore midfielder Ashley Moirano (Vero Beach, Fla./South Burlington (Vt.)) collected three points on a goal and an assist Thursday night to lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over American International in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made seven saves in net to earn the shutout for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce scored the only goal of the first half at the 20:37 mark of the frame. In the aftermath of a penalty corner, the ball ended up on the stick of senior defender Kayleigh Jaksina (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) along the end-line to the left of the cage. Jaksina sent a centering pass into the middle where sophomore forward Nicole Henrique (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) knocked it into the cage for her third goal of the season to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead.

Franklin Pierce controlled play in the opening 35 minutes to the tune of an 11-4 shots advantage.

The Ravens doubled the lead to 2-0 just over four minutes into the second half when Moirano unleashed a shot from near the top of the circle. Junior forward Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) got her stick to the ball and was able to redirect it into the cage for her fourth goal of the season. Later, with 6:31 to play, Moirano tallied her fourth goal of the season as well to create the 3-0 final. Moirano dribbled into the middle of the circle from the left side and fired a shot just inside the left post for the unassisted score.

American International held an 8-4 shots advantage in the second half, but Franklin Pierce kept a 15-12 edge over the full 70 minutes.

Tormollan made seven saves in front of the Franklin Pierce cage to earn the second shutout of her freshman campaign. Freshman Kim Steiner (Redford, N.Y./Little Falls) made eight saves for American International in defeat.

The Ravens (7-9, 7-8 NE-10) return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they host Stonehill in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Sodexo Field and Franklin Pierce will honor its three-player senior class prior to the game. American International (4-13, 4-11 NE-10) returns to action on Oct. 18 at home against Adelphi.
