SCSU opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the first half when
sophomore forward Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) sent a shot
from 15 feet out on the right side off a feed from junior
midfielder KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H./Oyster River). The
goal was the 10th of the season for Winterbottom
From there, Franklin Pierce would score four consecutive goals in a
21-minute stretch to take a 4-1 lead into halftime. Junior forward
Debler scored her first two goals of the season 5:04 apart to give
the Ravens a 2-1 lead. First, she scored 8:50 after
McCafferty’s goal by tipping in a shot from sophomore
midfielder Ashley Moirano (Vero
Beach, Fla./Burlington (Vt.)). Just over five minutes later,
Debler scored again from in front of the left post off a feed from
sophomore forward Nicole Henrique
(Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case). After over 10 scoreless
minutes, Dolan picked up her first goal of the game off a centering
feed from the left side by junior forward Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham,
Mass./Bellingham). Just over five minutes later, Dolan would
score again, her fourth of the season when she pushed home the
rebound of an Abernethy shot.
Franklin Pierce held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first
half.
Southern Connecticut State would make things interesting with a
pair of second half goals to cut the final deficit to one goal.
With 18:45 to play in regulation, the Owls cut the lead to 4-2 when
senior midfielder Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) dug
the ball out of a scramble in front of the cage and passed to
junior forward Lauren Karn (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), who
scored her first goal of the season. SCSU would close to within a
goal at 4-3 with just 2:35 remaining in regulation as senior
forward Jennifer Sousa (Hartford, Conn./Wethersfield) deflected
home a pass from senior forward Grace Martha (Cheshire,
Conn./Cheshire). The Owls would create a couple scoring chances in
the waning moments of the game, but could not find the tying
goal.
SCSU held a 6-3 shots advantage in the second half as each team
attempted 12 shots over the full 70 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin
Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made four saves in
