Each scores twice in first half

Danielle Dolan Danielle Dolan scored twice on Tuesday night against Southern Connecticut State.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 30, 2008) – Junior forward Katie Debler (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and freshman forward Danielle Dolan (West Brookfield, Mass./Quaboag Regional) combined to score four consecutive first-half goals on Tuesday night to lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Three different players scored goals for Southern Connecticut State.

SCSU opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the first half when sophomore forward Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) sent a shot from 15 feet out on the right side off a feed from junior midfielder KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H./Oyster River). The goal was the 10th of the season for Winterbottom

From there, Franklin Pierce would score four consecutive goals in a 21-minute stretch to take a 4-1 lead into halftime. Junior forward Debler scored her first two goals of the season 5:04 apart to give the Ravens a 2-1 lead. First, she scored 8:50 after McCafferty’s goal by tipping in a shot from sophomore midfielder Ashley Moirano (Vero Beach, Fla./Burlington (Vt.)). Just over five minutes later, Debler scored again from in front of the left post off a feed from sophomore forward Nicole Henrique (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case). After over 10 scoreless minutes, Dolan picked up her first goal of the game off a centering feed from the left side by junior forward Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham). Just over five minutes later, Dolan would score again, her fourth of the season when she pushed home the rebound of an Abernethy shot.

Franklin Pierce held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half.

Southern Connecticut State would make things interesting with a pair of second half goals to cut the final deficit to one goal. With 18:45 to play in regulation, the Owls cut the lead to 4-2 when senior midfielder Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis Mills) dug the ball out of a scramble in front of the cage and passed to junior forward Lauren Karn (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), who scored her first goal of the season. SCSU would close to within a goal at 4-3 with just 2:35 remaining in regulation as senior forward Jennifer Sousa (Hartford, Conn./Wethersfield) deflected home a pass from senior forward Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire). The Owls would create a couple scoring chances in the waning moments of the game, but could not find the tying goal.

SCSU held a 6-3 shots advantage in the second half as each team attempted 12 shots over the full 70 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made four saves in net to earn the victory for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn./Womogo) made three saves in front of the Southern Connecticut State cage in defeat.

The Ravens (4-7, 4-6 NE-10) return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Merrimack for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Warrior Field in North Andover, Mass. Franklin Pierce returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 8 against Saint Anselm at 6 p.m. Southern Connecticut State (6-6, 6-4 NE-10) returns to action on Oct. 4 at home against Saint Anselm.
