Field Hockey Falls At No. 6 Saint Michaels, 1-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. (September 25,
2008) – Senior midfielder Sara Fournier (Swanton,
Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) scored the only goal of the game on
Thursday afternoon to lead No. 6 nationally ranked Saint
Michael’s to a 1-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce
University field hockey team in Northeast-10 Conference play at
Duffy Field. Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville,
Maine/Waterville) made eight saves for Franklin Pierce in
defeat.
After the first half-hour went scoreless, Saint Michael’s
struck for the game’s only goal with 3:04 remaining in the
opening half. Fournier took a pass from senior forward Andrea
Slaven (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and beat Tormollan to give
the Purple Knights a lead they would not relinquish.
Saint Michael’s held a 9-1 shots advantage in the first
half. Franklin Pierce held its own in the second half and enjoyed
an 8-7 edge in shots in the period, but could not find the tying
goal before time expired.
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Smalling (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) made
five saves in front of the Saint Michael’s cage to post the
shutout. Tormollan stopped eight of nine shots sent her way for
Franklin Pierce in defeat.
The Ravens (3-6, 3-5 NE-10) return to the field on Saturday, Sept.
27, when they return home to host Massachusetts Lowell in a
Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H. Saint Michael’s (6-2, 6-2
NE-10) returns to action on Sept. 28 at American
International.
