WORCESTER, Mass. (September 1, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at H.L. Rocheleau Field. The Greyhounds’ Sarah Ranieri (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) scored the game-winning tally 50 seconds into overtime in the first Northeast-10 game of the season for the Ravens.

Ranieri scored her second goal of the game off an assist from teammate Jenna Luce (Conway, Mass./Frontier), who fed Ranieri from the left side of the cage.

Franklin Pierce came out strong to begin the game, as sophomore Katie Debler (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) scored the first goal of the afternoon at the 6:21 mark. Debler deflected a pass from graduate student Mary Beth Huszar (Greenville, N.H./Mascenic Regional) past the Assumption netminder for her first goal of the season.

The Greyhounds came back, however, scoring two goals before halftime to take a 2-1 lead into the second half. Maura Strickland (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) had her shot blocked by Ravens goaltender Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), but teammate Hillary Zysk (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) was there to collect the rebound and put it past Howard to tie the game at one. In the 32nd minute, Ranieri scored her first goal of the game by redirecting a pass from Brittany Ford (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) past Howard.

Ravens sophomore Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) scored the game-tying goal for the visitors with less than 13 minutes remaining in regulation, collecting a loose ball in front of the net and finding the goal. Huszar was credited with the assist, her second of the game.

Kaitlin Burke (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) earned her first win of the season in net for the Greyhounds, making seven saves for the home team. Howard took the loss for the Ravens despite making three saves.

Franklin Pierce (0-2, 0-1 NE-10) returns home for the team’s 2007 home opener on Tuesday afternoon, as the Ravens take on Stonehill at 4 p.m. at Sodexho Field. Assumption (1-1, 1-1 NE-10) hosts NE-10 foe Saint Anselm on Thursday afternoon.
