No. 8 Saint Michael’s Tops Franklin Pierce, 3-1

Brancaleone leads Purple Knights with two goals and an assist

COLCHESTER, Vt. (October 10, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce field hockey team suffered a tough 3-1 setback to Saint Michael’s College, ranked No. 8 in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll. The Purple Knights collected two unanswered goals in the second half to earn their eighth victory of the season.

Saint Michael’s opened the scoring midway through the first half as senior Lindsay Brancaleone (Gloucester, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) posted her first goal of the match off an assist from sophomore Andrea Slaven (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick).

Franklin Pierce fired back in the closing seconds of the half to knot the score at 1-1 as sophomore Jennifer Provencher (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) deposited her second goal of the season off a dish from senior captain Angela Barone (Norwood, Pa./Interboro).

Saint Michael’s took the lead just 5:23 into the second half when Brancaleone registered her second goal of the game off a helper from sophomore Tricia McCormick (East Walpole, Mass./Walpole). The Purple Knights added an insurance goal just six minutes later on a goal by senior Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J./Mount Saint Mary’s Academy).

Saint Michael’s goalkeeper, senior Tina Nardi (Rupert, Vt./Salem Central) stopped five shots to preserve the win for the Purple Knights. Franklin Pierce senior goalkeeper, Amanda Pietraszuk (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) made three saves in the loss.

Franklin Pierce (3-8, 3-7 NE-10) will be in action again on Thursday as it travels to No. 7 ranked UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. Saint Michael’s (8-5, 7-4 NE-10) travels to Assumption College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
