Franklin Pierce Blanked by No. 1 UMass Lowell, 5-0
River Hawks use five second half goals to defeat Ravens

RINDGE, N.H. (October 2, 2004) –
The Franklin Pierce field hockey team was defeated 5-0 by visiting,
No. 1 nationally ranked UMass Lowell today in Northeast-10 action.
After a first half in which neither team scored a goal, the
top-ranked River Hawks exploded for five goals in the second half
en route to their 12th victory of the season. With the win, UMass
Lowell remains undefeated and improves their record to 12-0
overall, 9-0 in league play. Franklin Pierce drops to 3-6 both
overall and in conference competition following today’s
match.
Junior Taylor Kloss (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) broke the
scoreless tie with an unassisted goal just 3:03 into the second
half. From there, the River Hawks erupted for three more goals in a
span of 2:55. Sophomore Sara Hohenberger (Windham, N.H./Salem)
notched the first of those off a pass from senior Jacklyn Driscoll
(Waltham, Mass./Waltham) with 21:49 remaining in the second half.
Freshman Annie Pease (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) came off the
bench and quickly scored the third UMass Lowell goal 1:45 later.
Driscoll, who finished with five points on the day, scored the
final two goals for UMass Lowell. She now leads the team with 30
points and 12 goals. The first of her two tallies came on a penalty
shot at the 18:54 mark in the second half. She then capped off a
brilliant second half by taking a cross by Hohenberger and sending
it past Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Brandi Guertin (Bellingham,
Mass./Bellingham) with 13:29 left in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Staiti (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional)
played the majority of the game in net for the River Hawks, saving
all four shots that she faced en route to her eleventh victory of
the season. Despite saving 19 shots, Guertin took the loss for the
Ravens.
Franklin Pierce (3-6, 3-6 NE-10) will be in action on Tuesday, as
they travel to Saint Anselm College for a Northeast-10 Conference
match at 4 p.m. UMass Lowell (12-0, 9-0 NE-10) will also play on
Tuesday, when they travel to Saint Michael’s College for a
league game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
