Henry Earns Programs First Verizon Academic All-America Honor
Wyoming, R.I., native earns College’s first Academic All-America pick since 1998
RINDGE, N.H. (June 12, 2003) –
Franklin Pierce senior field hockey player Kelly Henry (Wyoming, R.I./Chariho
Regional) earned a spot on the 2003 Verizon Academic
All-America College Division Women’s At-Large Third Team. The
teams are voted on by members of College Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Henry, who has earned Verizon District I Academic All-America
first team honors each of the last two years, earns the first
Academic All-America honor in program history and is the first
Academic All-American at Franklin Pierce since former women’s
soccer standouts Pauliina Miettinen and Pauliina Auveri earned
At-Large spots in 1998. Henry is also the first Academic
All-District honoree in field hockey history at the College.
Henry is the lone Northeast-10 Conference student-athlete selected
to the women’s at-large team from a ballot of Division II and
III student-athletes across the country in the sports of crew,
gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo,
field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle.
Henry was a four-year letterwinner on the Franklin Pierce field
hockey team who holds the program record with 11 career assists and
also ranks fifth in program history with 25 career points and sixth
with seven career goals in 62 career games, which ranks third. This
past fall, she ranked fourth on the team with nine points on three
goals and three assists in 14 games played for the Ravens. She
started every match over the final three years of her career at the
College.
Henry, who was Valedictorian of the Class of 2003, is a three-time
National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II
All-Academic honoree who earned a 3.99 cumulative grade point
average at the College while majoring in environmental science with
a minor in chemistry. The 2003 Richard Burns Female Scholar-Athlete
of the Year at the College earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average
in all but one semester and was nominated for the Woody Hayes
Division II Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Henry was
also inducted into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society.
A member of the Franklin Pierce Honors Council, Henry is an Honors
Program Award recipient and has been named to the Dean’s
Honor List every semester at the College, completing her graduation
requirements a semester early. She has studied at the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institute and completed internships at Pfizer
Pharmaceutical Company as well as BETA-Group, a civil engineering
firm. She also worked as a research assistant in the environmental
science department at Franklin Pierce.
Henry, a USAA All-American Scholar, is a member of the Gold Award
Alliance with the Girl Scouts of America and a member of the
Shoreline Dance Company. She volunteers her time as a coach at the
Rhode Island Field Hockey Summer Indoor League.
The Franklin Pierce field hockey team wrapped up its 2002 season
with a 4-10 overall record, 4-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
