Four Ravens Earn Spots on Fall Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Teams

Field hockey, men's cross country, men's soccer players all earn accolades

Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference selections

RINDGE, N.H. (February 3, 2016) – Four Franklin Pierce University student-athletes have been named to the fall 2015 Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference Team in their respective sports, as announced Wednesday by the Conference office. Field hockey saw senior forward Chelsey Burnell (Porter, Maine) and sophomore forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) honored, while junior Jon Holmes (Albany, N.Y.) of the men's cross country team and graduate student midfielder David Magee (Lurgan, Ireland) of the men's soccer team earned the accolade as well. The selected Ravens were among 79 student-athletes across seven sports honored by the Northeast-10.

To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must fulfill each of the following criteria: (1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions as a starter or significant contributor, (2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale), and (3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The teams are chosen by the vote of a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives.

For Holmes, it is his first selection to the cross country Academic All-Conference Team, and his third selection overall, as he earned the honor during both the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons in 2014-15. Each of the remaining three honorees earned their first Academic All-Conference selection.

Heading into her final semester at Franklin Pierce, Burnell currently holds a 3.92 grade-point average as a graphic communications major. She started all 18 games for the Ravens in 2015 and played in every game from the start of her junior season on. As a senior tri-captain this fall, Burnell finished second on the team in both goals (6) and points (12). She finished her career in crimson and grey tied for 13th all-time in program history in goals (12) and tied for 15th in assists (27). Burnell is a two-time NFHCA Scholar of Distinction, a three-time NFHCA National Academic Squad selection and a six-time Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.

As for Canavan, through three semesters in Rindge, she holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a health sciences major, all while being one of the Northeast-10's premier goal-scoring threats as well. An All-Northeast-10 Second Team selection this fall, she finished 15th in the country in points per game (1.33) and 17th in goals per game (0.56). In addition, Canavan ranked tied for eighth in the Northeast-10 in goals (10) and game-winning goals (3), tied for ninth in points (24), tied for 11th in shot attempts (55) and tied for 12th in shots on goal (33). Through the end of her sophomore season, she is already tied for fourth all-time in program history in goals (20) and ranked sixth in points (46). Canavan earned Scholar of Distinction and National Academic Squad honors from the NFHCA a year ago and should collect both again this year, and she is a three-time Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.

Holmes has finished five semesters at Franklin Pierce and carries a 3.80 grade-point average as a graphic communications major. This fall, he earned All-East Region honors with a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Championship East Regional, where he turned in a 10k time of 32:15.1. Holmes also earned All-Northeast-10 Second Team honors at the Northeast-10 Championship, where he finished 12th, with an 8k time of 25:51.01. He has been selected to the Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his five semesters on campus thus far.

Magee currently has a 4.00 GPA while pursuing his MBA in sports management at Franklin Pierce. While starting all 17 games in the midfield for the Ravens this fall, he earned NSCAA All-East Region Second Team honors and All-Northeast-10 First Team accolades as well. Magee finished the fall second on the team in shot attempts (29) and tied for third in shots on goal (13), while tallying six points on two goals and two assists. He is a two-time selection to the Northeast-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
