Ravens Split Matches at World University Games

Great Britain tops Chinese Taipei 94-74 to reach 5th-place game in women's basketball
Serbia falls to Germany 4-0 and will compete for 11th place in women's soccer

BELGRADE, Serbia (July 8, 2009) - Franklin Pierce University's contingent at the 2009 World University Games had split results on day nine of the event in Belgrade today.

Franklin Pierce women's basketball standouts Jennifer and Johannah Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Academy (Conn.)) and their teammates from Great Britain posted a 94-74 victory over Chinese Taipei to advance to Friday's 5th-place game against Poland at 2 p.m. (EDT). Poland, who defeated Great Britain yesterday 74-64 behind a strong defensive effort, advanced to the 5th-place round with a 75-65 triumph over Slovakia today.

Franklin Pierce's Snezana Stojkovic (Vitojevci, Serbia), a rising junior on the Ravens women's soccer team, and her teammates from host Serbia dropped a 4-0 decision to Germany in the 9th-12th place classification round. Serbia will now play Estonia in Friday's 11th-place game on Friday at 4:30 a.m. (EDT). Estonia was defeated by Poland today, 8-2.

Stojkovic, who is keeping a blog as a member of the host delegation at the Games for the Franklin Pierce athletics website, did not play in today's match with Germany at Stadium YFC Belgrade. She has appeared in three of Serbia's five games at the tournament, starting one, and playing a total of 65 minutes so far.

The Leedham sisters both played key roles in helping Great Britain to today's win over Chinese Taipei at Novi Belgrade Sports Hall. Three-time All-American Johannah Leedham, a rising senior at Franklin Pierce, posted her first double-double of the tournament with 16 points and ten rebounds (four offensive) to go with six assists in 26 minutes as a starter. She was 4-for-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from three-point range, while converting all six free-throw attempts on the night.

Jennifer Leedham, a recent graduate and two-time All-Northeast-10 Conference selection who was recently named assistant coach at Franklin Pierce, added seven points, seven assists and a steal in 25 minutes off the bench for Great Britain. She was 1-for-2 from the field, hitting her lone three-point attempt and converting all four free-throws.

Great Britain dominated the glass in the victory, out-rebounding Chinese Taipei 60-29 with Johannah Leedham one of four from Britain with ten or more rebounds. Britain trailed early, but opened a 12-point lead (26-14) by the end of the first quarter and never looked back with the lead growing to as much as 26 at one point.

Johannah is ranked fourth among tournament leaders in scoring with 18 points per game, while leading the event in free-throw percentage at 95.7-percent (22-for-23) and is also ranked seventh in three-point field goals (2.3/gm) and tied for ninth in assists with older sister, Jennifer (3.3/gm). Jen also ranks seventh among tournament leaders in three-point field goal percentage at 46.7-percent (7-for-15).
